Kansas City Royals vs Houston Astros Predictions: Seth Lugo vs Miguel Ullola

Game time: September 17, 2026 at 7:15 PM ET

Article updated Sep 17, 6:25 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Houston’s stronger season bullpen numbers face counterevidence in its recent results, while its starting assignment remains unsettled across sources.

The matchup and pitching question

The Kansas City Royals visit the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on September 17, 2026, for a 7:15 p.m. ET MLB game. Kansas City enters at 67-85 and Houston at 76-76. SportsJaw lists Houston at -150 on the moneyline and Kansas City at +125.

Both Covers and MLB.com list Seth Lugo for Kansas City. Houston’s assignment is less certain: Covers names Miguel Ullola, while MLB.com lists TBD. Ullola should therefore be treated as a possible starter, rather than an announced certainty.

Lugo has a 4.99 ERA, a 7-8 record and 126 strikeouts. Covers reports a 7.30 ERA over his last five listed outings, but the individual starts show variation. Cleveland scored nine earned runs against him in three and two-thirds innings on August 30. At Boston on September 11, he allowed seven hits and two earned runs over five innings, walking two and striking out seven.

Ullola’s only listed recent appearance was one scoreless inning at Tampa Bay on September 11, with no hits, walks or strikeouts. That appearance provides little basis for projecting a full starting workload.

Houston’s strengths come with limits

Houston’s season bullpen ERA of 3.75 and WHIP of 1.22 compare favorably with Kansas City’s 4.58 and 1.43. Those figures support a Houston relief-pitching advantage, but do not establish which relievers are available for this game.

The Astros average 4.44 runs scored per game against the Royals’ 4.22. Recent results offer a counterweight: Houston is 3-7 over its last 10 listed games, Kansas City is 4-6, and the Royals won the September 16 meeting 5-2.

Final betting decision

Pass. Houston’s bullpen numbers and Lugo’s recent struggles provide reasons to consider the favorite, but the unresolved Astros starter prevents a sufficiently supported assessment at -150. Kansas City’s +125 price does not independently establish value. The evidence also leaves too much uncertainty to recommend over 8.5 (-130) or under 8.5 (+110). No winner or score is projected.
