Game outlook

San Jose St. is on the road playing Santa Clara at the Leavey Center stadium on Saturday, 12/10/2022 @ 5:00pm EST. Santa Clara -9.5 was the opening favorite and line hasn't moved.

A non-conference matchup between the San Jose State Spartans and Santa Clara Broncos concludes the 2022-23 NCAA men's basketball season on Saturday, December 10.

Following an ugly loss at Arkansas, the Spartans bounced back

As 8.5-point home favorites, the San Jose State Spartans defeated the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners 58-48 this past Tuesday, bouncing back from last weekend's embarrassing 99-58 loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks. Despite shooting just 35 percent from the field, SJSU outrebounded the Roadrunners 49-25 while posting 17 offensive rebounds. Last Tuesday, the Spartans shot 3-for-19 from beyond the arc. A total of nine assists were handed out and 13 turnovers were committed. Despite allowing just ten free-throw attempts to the Roadrunners, the Spartans attacked the rim and shot 21-for-28 from the free-throw line. As a sophomore, Alvaro Cardenas had ten points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Ibrahima Diallo contributed nine points and 11 rebounds (five offensive).

In t he KenPom rankings, SJSU is ranked 203 and in the NCAA NET rankings, it is ranked 186. On 46.8% shooting from the field (101st) and 33.5% from downtown (207th), the Spartans average 102.5 points per 100 possessions (165th in the nation). At Bart Torvik, they are 48th in defensive rebound percentage and 30th in offensive rebound percentage. On the other hand, the Spartans allow 105.5 points per 100 possessions (252nd) on 36.5% shooting from beyond the arc (305th).

With a five-game winning streak, the Broncos are on a roll

The Santa Clara Broncos (8-2; 4-5 ATS) beat the New Mexico State Aggies 66-65 on Wednesday. It was the Broncos' fifth straight victory, but they failed to cover a 7-point spread. Deshawndre Washington hit the buzzer-beater with his leg inside the arc to make it 66-65 for the Aggies after they nearly blew an 11-point second-half lead. For the fourth consecutive home game, the Broncos held their opponents to 66 points. While posting a 14/17 assist-to-turnover ratio, Santa Clara shot 9-for-27 from beyond the arc and 7-for-14 from the free-throw line. Keshawn Justice, the senior guard, scored 18 points and four triples, Brandin Podziemski, the sophomore guard, had 16 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, and Carlos Stewart, the sophomore guard, scored 16 points (3-for-4 from beyond the arc).

Santa Clara is ranked 107 by KenPom and 104 by NCAA NET. On 42.3% shooting from the field (279th) and 32.2% from downtown (250th), the Broncos score 103.9 points per 100 possessions (127th in the nation). Santa Clara ranks 86th in 3-point attempts per game (24.5), fifth in defensive rebounds per game (30.2), and 15th in opponents' free-throw attempts (11.5). Torvik ranks Santa Clara No. 11 in defensive rebound percentage and No. 90 in adjusted defense efficiency (97.9 points per 100 possessions).

The Broncos love to push the ball in transition and take a lot of threes, while the Spartans are awful at defending the 3-point line. Santa Clara will be too strong for SJSU, so I'm siding with the Broncos.

In addition, the Broncos have a strong defense. They will control the glass and limit the Spartans to one shot. In six meetings with the Spartans, the Broncos have gone 2-4 ATS, and this is an opportunity for Santa Clara to improve.

San Jose St. Highlights
