Ohio State at Texas: Strong Starts, but No Clear Betting Edge

The matchup and the opening results

Ohio State visits Texas in Austin on September 12 for its first road game of the 2026 college football season. Texas Athletics lists kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC against the No. 1 Buckeyes.

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin completed 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns against Ball State. Jeremiah Smith finished with eight receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns, with all of that production coming before halftime, according to Ohio State Athletics.

Texas began its season with a 59-7 victory over Texas State. Arch Manning passed for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns. Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Emmett Mosley V combined for more than 200 receiving yards and three scores, according to Texas Athletics.

Recent history does not settle the price

Ohio State won the teams’ previous two meetings: 28-14 in the 2025 CFP semifinal and 14-7 in the 2025 regular-season opener. Those results establish recent series success, but they do not establish a betting advantage for this September matchup.

Texas is listed at -1.5 (-110) and -122 on the moneyline. Ohio State is +1.5 (-110) and +105. Neither the prior meetings nor the opening passing performances provide a sufficient basis to conclude that either side offers value at those prices.

The final call: Pass

The total is 49.5, with over_total at 49.5 (-110) and under_total at 49.5 (-110). Both passing attacks produced substantial opening numbers, while Texas also forced three turnovers and stopped two fourth-down attempts.

Those performances came against different opponents and leave the central matchup questions unanswered. They do not establish how consistently either offense will score here or support a reliable projected margin. The recommendation is Pass on the side and total, with no winner or score prediction.
