South Alabama Jaguars vs Marshall Thundering Herd Predictions October 20, 2026

Game time: October 20, 2026 at 7:30 PM ET

Venue: Joan C. Edwards Stadium — Huntington, WV

Article updated Oct 15, 2:05 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

South Alabama will beat Marshall 34-31, with the Jaguars’ recent rushing production providing the strongest reason to favor the visitors. Their six rushing touchdowns against Arkansas State give them the offensive edge in this forecast, but defensive concerns keep confidence low. Neither South Alabama -2.5 (-113) nor the 60.5 total offers a compelling wager. The official SportsJaw recommendation is Pass.

South Alabama Jaguars vs Marshall Thundering Herd prediction and best bet

South Alabama gets the pick because its latest offensive performance offers a stronger foundation than Marshall’s turnover-filled outing. The Jaguars won at Arkansas State behind a productive ground game, while the Herd spent its latest contest trying to recover from a 27-0 deficit.

The best bet is Pass. South Alabama’s defensive performance leaves room for Marshall to challenge the favorite, and a three-point projected victory gives little cushion against -2.5. The forecast favors the Jaguars, but the spread and total each carry enough uncertainty to leave both alone.

South Alabama Jaguars outlook

South Alabama beat Arkansas State 56-49 on October 8 to reach 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Sun Belt play. It was the Jaguars’ second consecutive 50-point game, and the 56 points marked their highest scoring total in a Sun Belt game.

Keenan Phillips supplied much of that production. He rushed 19 times for a career-high 157 yards and three touchdowns, then added a 100-yard kickoff-return touchdown. His 284 all-purpose yards and four scores show how much influence one player had on that result. His return contribution also matters when judging how repeatable the scoring output might be.

Jared Hollins completed 6 of 10 passes for 76 yards and one touchdown while scoring twice on the ground. South Alabama finished with 296 net rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. That is a persuasive recent rushing performance, although the limited passing volume leaves a separate question about how the offense would respond if Marshall slows the run.

The defensive trade-off was substantial: Arkansas State gained 516 total yards, including 418 passing yards. South Alabama forced three turnovers, two on interceptions, but still conceded 49 points. That combination makes a comfortable road victory difficult to project.

Marshall Thundering Herd outlook

Marshall fell to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in Sun Belt play after its October 10 loss to Coastal Carolina. The official recap’s scoreboard records a 27-21 final, although its narrative gives 27-7. That discrepancy warrants caution about the finishing margin; the reported 27-0 deficit still captures the difficult position Marshall faced.

Judah Price offered an encouraging development, carrying 12 times for 124 yards and a touchdown. He became Marshall’s first 100-yard rusher of the 2026 season and added two receptions and a receiving touchdown. His rushing and receiving scores were the first two touchdowns of his college career.

Marshall totaled 221 net rushing yards on 41 attempts. Zion Turner completed 18 of 27 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns, giving the Herd another positive offensive performance to build around.

The biggest problem was possession security. Head coach Tony Gibson reported six turnovers in the official recap. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson threw all three of Marshall’s interceptions; Turner threw none. Keeping those individual performances distinct matters when assessing the offense rather than treating every quarterback possession as equally risky.

Key matchup factors

Ball security could separate two teams that recently moved the ball effectively on the ground. South Alabama’s takeaways and Marshall’s giveaways favor the Jaguars in this comparison, but those totals came against different opponents. Expecting another six-turnover Marshall game would place too much weight on one result.

South Alabama’s pass defense is the strongest counterweight to its offensive advantage. Turner’s recent production gives Marshall a plausible route to exploit that concern. The Jaguars’ large passing-yardage concession should not, however, be treated as proof that their defensive front is equally vulnerable.

Phillips’ kickoff touchdown adds another source of uncertainty. It demonstrates his scoring potential outside the offense, but projecting another return score would inflate expectations. The winner pick rests primarily on South Alabama’s rushing production.

South Alabama Jaguars vs Marshall Thundering Herd spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on South Alabama -2.5 (-113) and Marshall +2.5 (-111). The projected South Alabama victory would cover the favorite’s spread by only half a point. That narrow difference is too fragile to turn a low-confidence score forecast into a wager.

Marshall’s offensive production makes the underdog competitive in this assessment, but its recent giveaways weaken the case for taking the points. Neither side has a sufficiently convincing advantage at these prices.

South Alabama Jaguars vs Marshall Thundering Herd total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 60.5 (-113) and Under 60.5 (-117). The projected 65 points lean toward the Over, reflecting South Alabama’s scoring production and the opportunities its defense recently conceded.

The uncertainty is how those opportunities become points. Turnovers can stop possessions or create favorable scoring chances, while Phillips’ return touchdown contributed to an unusually high-scoring result. Two recent recaps are not enough to confidently price those effects into this matchup. The forecast sits above 60.5, but the Over remains a pass.

South Alabama Jaguars vs Marshall Thundering Herd projected score

Projected score: South Alabama Jaguars 34, Marshall Thundering Herd 31. South Alabama’s rushing performance earns the winner pick, while Marshall’s production through Price and Turner keeps the projected margin close.

Confidence is low. A cleaner Marshall performance against a Jaguars defense that struggled through the air is the strongest upset argument. South Alabama is the forecast winner; the spread recommendation, total recommendation and single official SportsJaw betting recommendation are all Pass.
