California Golden Bears vs SMU Mustangs Predictions October 24, 2026

Game time: October 24, 2026 at 12:00 PM ET

Venue: Gerald J. Ford Stadium — Dallas, TX

Article updated Oct 19, 8:20 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

SMU is the pick to beat California 31-14, with its balanced offensive performance against Virginia providing the strongest matchup advantage over a Cal defense that just surrendered 509 yards. The Mustangs have the stronger recent case to win, but the supplied prices offer no compelling wager. Pass on SMU -19.5 (-109) and the total of 53.5.

California Golden Bears vs SMU Mustangs prediction and best bet

SMU should win this matchup, but asking the Mustangs to cover 19.5 points requires a stronger conclusion than their latest performance warrants. They beat Virginia 23-13 on Oct. 17, while California lost 41-7 to No. 21 Wake Forest. Those results favor SMU in the forecast without making another lopsided Cal defeat inevitable.

The official betting recommendation is Pass. SMU's recent offensive balance and defensive performance justify picking the home team. One game apiece against different opponents offers a less persuasive reason to lay nearly three touchdowns or bet a total that depends heavily on California's response.

California Golden Bears outlook

California's loss to Wake Forest exposed problems on both sides of the ball. The Golden Bears gained 266 yards, split between 191 passing and 75 rushing, while conceding 509. The concern entering Dallas is whether Cal can improve its own production enough to avoid asking its defense to carry the matchup.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele connected with tight end Mason Mini for a 28-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Chase Hendricks contributed eight receptions for 54 yards. Those contributions give Cal identifiable receiving options, although neither performance alone signals that a major scoring rebound is coming.

Ashten Emory supplied a more encouraging individual result with 56 rushing yards on 12 carries, his season high. Building on that production would give California another route to moving the ball. The forecast still calls for a modest offensive recovery rather than assuming last week's seven points will repeat.

SMU Mustangs outlook

Kevin Jennings completed 23 of 36 throws for 246 yards and two touchdowns against Virginia. Kendrick Raphael added 124 rushing yards, reaching 100 for the second time this season. That combination is the clearest recent reason to expect SMU to challenge California in multiple ways.

Jalen Hale scored on a 37-yard catch-and-run, and Randy Pittman Jr. caught a six-yard touchdown pass. SMU also held Virginia to 258 total yards. The victory extended the Mustangs' home record in ACC games to 10-0 since joining the conference in 2024.

Brendan Baird made field goals from 23, 45 and 26 yards after SMU entered the game 3-for-7 on field-goal attempts. That was an encouraging improvement. It is still a short stretch of success, so projecting flawless kicking would be premature.

Key matchup factors

California's defensive choices are central to the forecast. Extra attention to Raphael could create opportunities for Jennings; prioritizing the passing game could leave room for the run. SMU's latest performance suggests it has options, though the exact effectiveness of either approach remains a projection.

The difference between winning and covering also matters. SMU's unbeaten ACC home record supports confidence in the setting, but it says nothing here about how often those wins cleared a 19.5-point handicap. California can lose decisively and still reward spread bettors.

The strongest caution is the opponent change. Wake Forest's production against Cal and Virginia's struggles against SMU are useful context, not interchangeable measurements. They support the direction of the forecast more convincingly than its precise margin.

California Golden Bears vs SMU Mustangs spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on SMU -19.5 (-109) and California +19.5 (-109).

The projected 17-point margin falls on California's side of the spread, but a 2.5-point difference from an editorial forecast is too thin to justify a wager here. Cal's latest defensive showing makes taking the points uncomfortable, while SMU's 10-point win over Virginia offers limited reassurance about laying this many.

SMU remains the winner pick. Neither side of this handicap earns an actionable recommendation.

California Golden Bears vs SMU Mustangs total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 53.5 (-111) and Under 53.5 (-108).

The forecast totals 45 points and points toward a lower-scoring result. Cal's recent offensive struggles and SMU's defensive effort against Virginia explain that direction. They are not enough to make Under 53.5 an official wager.

California's defense is the main counterweight. Another difficult afternoon could let SMU contribute substantially more than the projected 31 points. With only these recent snapshots to judge the scoring matchup, the total remains a Pass.

California Golden Bears vs SMU Mustangs projected score

Game forecast: SMU Mustangs 31, California Golden Bears 14. Confidence: medium. SMU's passing and rushing production, paired with its latest defensive result, support an ordinary edge in the winner forecast.

California improving after the Wake Forest loss is the strongest challenge to the projected margin. That possibility matters more to the spread than to the winner selection. SMU is the pick to win; the spread and total are separate passes. Official SportsJaw wager: Pass.
