Indiana St. Sycamores vs South Dakota Coyotes Predictions October 3, 2026

Game time: October 3, 2026 at 3:00 PM ET

Venue: The DakotaDome — Vermillion, SD

Article updated Oct 1, 10:20 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

South Dakota will beat Indiana State, with a projected score of South Dakota 38, Indiana State 24. Austyn Modrzewski’s touchdown production and passing efficiency give the Coyotes the strongest winning argument. The supplied South Dakota -18.5 (-115) spread asks for more separation than this forecast anticipates, however, and neither side nor the 60.5 total offers a compelling wager. The official recommendation is Pass.

Indiana St. Sycamores vs South Dakota Coyotes prediction and best bet

South Dakota gets the pick because its quarterback has delivered across several starts. Modrzewski threw multiple touchdown passes in four of his first five starts, and South Dakota’s current preview lists his 180.3 quarterback rating third in the FCS. That sustained production is the clearest reason to expect the Coyotes to lead the scoring.

Winning and covering 18.5 points are different demands. Indiana State brings an efficient runner in Aaron Ball and a receiving threat in Jayden Reed, whose September 26 performance gives the underdog a credible scoring route. South Dakota is the forecast winner, but the official best-bet decision is Pass. Neither spread side earns a recommendation at its supplied price.

Indiana St. Sycamores outlook

Ball gives Indiana State a practical starting point. Through five weeks, he had rushed for 352 yards at 6.64 yards per carry, with four rushing touchdowns and five total touchdowns. His efficiency makes the ground game an appealing way to approach this matchup, particularly if it helps Indiana State avoid asking its passing attack to rescue difficult downs.

Reed supplies the strongest recent receiving evidence. The freshman caught eight passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns against North Dakota on September 26. Indiana State’s current preview credits him with four receiving touchdowns through five weeks. That performance supports an expectation that the Sycamores can threaten through the air, although it says nothing specific about how South Dakota will cover him.

Brady Allen made his first Indiana State start of 2026 in that September 26 game. Reed’s output is encouraging context for the passing attack, but one productive receiver’s afternoon is a narrow foundation for projecting another road performance. Ball and Reed give Indiana State two plausible routes to points. Whether those routes produce enough sustained offense to stay within the spread remains the key uncertainty.

South Dakota Coyotes outlook

South Dakota enters ranked No. 13 in the Stats Perform media poll and No. 16 in the AFCA coaches poll. More persuasive for this forecast is Modrzewski’s production: his 15 passing touchdowns ranked second in the FCS in the Coyotes’ current preview. His efficiency rating reinforces the touchdown total rather than leaving the argument dependent on scoring alone.

Tennel Bryant averaged 31.1 yards per catch and had three touchdowns. That receiving average suggests considerable big-play potential, although it is not a forecast of how frequently those gains will come Saturday. Charles Pierre Jr. passed 2,000 career rushing yards against Eastern Washington on September 12 and had 25 career rushing touchdowns. His experience complements the passing case without proving a current rushing advantage.

Defensively, Wade Abrams led South Dakota with 48 tackles and 9.6 per game, both listed as conference-leading marks. John Starman led the team with 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Those are useful individual contributions, but they do not describe the defense’s overall efficiency. Kicker Bohdie Ing was also 5-for-5 on field goals. South Dakota has several contributors worth accounting for, with Modrzewski still carrying the greatest weight in the prediction.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Indiana State can answer South Dakota’s passing scores often enough to keep the margin manageable. Ball offers a rushing route and Reed a receiving route, so treating the underdog as an automatic low-scoring opponent would be a mistake. Conversely, their production alone is insufficient to project an upset.

South Dakota returns home after consecutive road weeks in Mountain and Eastern time zones. The Coyotes also lead the series 8-2, have won the last five meetings since 2019, and are 5-0 against Indiana State in Vermillion. Those are separate historical measures. They reinforce the home winner selection, but current offensive execution matters more than the series record when assessing an 18.5-point spread.

Indiana St. Sycamores vs South Dakota Coyotes spread prediction

Pass on South Dakota -18.5 (-115) and Indiana State +18.5 (-141). The projected 14-point margin falls on Indiana State’s side of the spread, but that arithmetic alone is not enough to recommend the underdog at -141.

Ball and Reed make a competitive margin plausible; Modrzewski and Bryant create the opposite risk through quick scoring plays. The evidence is stronger on individual offensive production than on either defense’s ability to limit it. South Dakota needs a win by at least 19 to cover. That is possible, but the case for paying either supplied spread price remains too fragile.

Indiana St. Sycamores vs South Dakota Coyotes total prediction

Pass on Over 60.5 (-114) and Under 60.5 (-116). The forecast totals 62 points, only 1.5 above the line. South Dakota’s passing production and Indiana State’s offensive playmakers give the Over a reasonable argument.

South Dakota has also scored at least 35 points in each of the past four series meetings, according to its preview. That history supports considering a substantial Coyotes scoring contribution, but it is no substitute for a current pace or defensive assessment. The scoring case is credible; the cushion against 60.5 is too small to justify an official total wager.

Indiana St. Sycamores vs South Dakota Coyotes projected score

Game forecast: South Dakota 38, Indiana State 24. Modrzewski’s repeated touchdown production is the strongest reason to select the Coyotes, with Bryant’s receiving average adding a plausible route to substantial gains. Medium confidence fits a supported home winner without implying a reliable cover.

The strongest counterargument comes from Indiana State’s playmakers. Ball’s rushing efficiency and Reed’s recent receiving performance could keep the Sycamores close enough to pressure the favorite. The forecast gives those threats meaningful scoring credit while still favoring South Dakota’s passing attack. Both spread sides and both total directions remain a Pass at the supplied lines and prices. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
