Kent State will beat Sacramento State, with a projected score of Kent State 24, Sacramento State 20. Dru DeShields' five-touchdown performance against Akron gives the Golden Flashes the stronger recent offensive showing. Sacramento State's pass defense and the teams' similar season scoring averages keep confidence low. Neither the supplied 10-point spread nor the 46.5 total offers a strong enough betting edge.

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs Sacramento St. Hornets prediction and best bet

Kent State gets the outright pick because its passing attack enters this matchup with a strong performance to build on. DeShields threw four touchdown passes in the 35-20 victory over Akron on Oct. 24, and Wayne Harris caught three of them. Sacramento State enters after a 34-17 loss at Ball State.

The best betting decision is Pass. Kent State's season scoring average of 14.9 points makes laying 10 uncomfortable, but Sacramento State's minus-9 turnover margin makes taking the points risky, too. The total presents a similar tension: modest offensive averages favor a lower score, while both teams' latest games finished above 46.5. The forecast favors Kent State without turning either market into an official wager.

SportsJaw total: Over 46.5 (-111); Under 46.5 (-109). Moneyline: Kent State -385; Sacramento State +302.

Kent St. Golden Flashes outlook

DeShields delivered an excellent result against Akron: 18 completions on 33 attempts, 294 passing yards and four passing touchdowns, plus a rushing touchdown. Harris supplied nine receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Together, they give Kent State a clear offensive pairing around which to build Friday's game plan.

The question is how much of that production carries forward. Kent State averages 286.0 total yards per game, including 186.0 passing and 100.0 rushing. Its 14.9-point scoring average is far below the 35 points it scored against Akron. That latest result raises expectations, but the season figures argue against expecting another four-touchdown passing performance.

DeShields enters with 1,439 passing yards, eight touchdowns, six interceptions and a 56.9% completion rate. Four of those eight passing touchdowns came in the Akron game, illustrating how heavily one strong afternoon shapes the current optimism. Sacramento State's allowance of 194.5 passing yards per game supplies a relevant test.

Kent State also rushed for only 82 yards against Akron. A stronger ground contribution would reduce the pressure on DeShields to repeat his scoring efficiency. For the forecast, the passing improvement earns Kent State the edge; the limited rushing production and modest season offense keep that edge narrow.

Sacramento St. Hornets outlook

Sacramento State's record is worse, but its offensive averages are slightly higher than Kent State's. The Hornets produce 298.1 total yards and 15.3 points per game, with 197.3 passing yards and 100.9 rushing yards. Those figures suggest a closer offensive comparison than the difference between a 3-5 team and a 1-7 team might imply.

Sustaining possessions remains a problem. Sacramento State converts 32.1% of third downs, ranking 124th in FBS. Its minus-9 turnover margin and 76.0 penalty yards per game add risks beyond ordinary offensive execution. Those season numbers make it difficult to trust the Hornets to keep every promising possession intact.

Jackson Sharman avoided interceptions at Ball State, completing 17 of 27 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Jace Wilson caught three passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, while Isaiah Ene led the rushing effort with 57 yards. Even so, Sacramento State finished behind Ball State in total yards, 417-266, and first downs, 26-16.

Sharman's season line includes 1,257 passing yards, eight touchdowns, six interceptions and 56.4% completions. The strongest counterweight to the offensive concerns is Sacramento State's pass defense, which ranks 42nd in FBS at 194.5 yards allowed per game. That offers a plausible way to keep Kent State within reach.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Kent State's latest passing performance signals improvement or simply a particularly productive game. Sacramento State's season pass defense makes repeating that output a tougher assumption. Passing yards allowed also measure yardage rather than scoring prevention, so that ranking alone cannot settle the matchup.

Third downs offer another useful comparison. Kent State allows opponents to convert 37.9%, while Sacramento State converts 32.1% offensively. Neither figure promises a Hornets turnaround. Their turnover margin introduces uncertainty for both markets: another costly mistake could widen Kent State's lead or create a short scoring opportunity. That possibility matters when considering both Sacramento State's points and an Under.

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs Sacramento St. Hornets spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Kent State -10 (-110) and Sacramento State +10 (-110). The projected four-point margin points toward the Hornets, but their turnover history and recent 17-point loss make the cushion less reassuring.

Kent State's Akron performance supplies a case for a bigger winning margin. Its season scoring average and Sacramento State's pass defense supply the opposing case. At -110 on either side, this is a market to leave alone. A forecast inside the number is useful context, but the evidence is too mixed to recommend Sacramento State.

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs Sacramento St. Hornets total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 46.5 (-111) and Under 46.5 (-109). The teams average a combined 30.2 points, which gives the Under an initial argument. Those offensive averages alone are an incomplete guide to what this particular game will produce.

Kent State's latest game totaled 55 points, and Sacramento State's totaled 51. Neither result guarantees another Over, but both temper reliance on the low season scoring averages. The projected 44 points sit below 46.5, with too little separation to justify an Under recommendation given the scoring uncertainty.

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs Sacramento St. Hornets projected score

Game forecast: Kent State 24, Sacramento State 20. DeShields and Harris provide the strongest recent offensive performance in the comparison, and Sacramento State's third-down struggles make the Golden Flashes the pick to win.

The strongest counterargument is Sacramento State's pass defense, supported by season offensive averages that are slightly better than Kent State's. Those factors keep the projected margin modest. Kent State's 35-point showing deserves weight without becoming the expectation for every game that follows.

Confidence is low because the recent results favor Kent State more clearly than the season offensive figures do. Both the spread and total remain a Pass. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
