Oklahoma visits Michigan with stronger opening results, but betting questions remain

The Sooners beat UTEP 51-0 to open their season, finishing with a 401-198 advantage in total yards. John Mateer threw for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Oklahoma allowed 10 first downs and limited UTEP to two conversions on 13 third-down attempts.
Michigan opened with a 13-12 victory over Western Michigan, secured by JJ Buchanan’s 47-yard touchdown catch as time expired. Buchanan finished with six receptions for 126 yards. The Wolverines committed three turnovers and converted 30 percent of their third downs.
Oklahoma’s defensive record gives Michigan’s offensive difficulties added relevance. In 2025, the Sooners led the nation in sacks and tackles for loss per game. They also beat Michigan 24-13 in Norman, gaining 408 yards to the Wolverines’ 288.
That history supports concern about Michigan’s ability to sustain drives, but it does not establish how this season’s rematch will unfold. Michigan also had individual defensive production in its opener: Dom Nichols recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks, while Troy Bowles made 12 tackles.
