Buccaneers at Bengals: Defensive changes complicate Week 1 betting

The matchup

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium on Sunday, September 13, for both teams’ 2026 NFL regular-season opener.

Tampa Bay finished 8-9 in 2025 and lost a playoff spot on a tiebreaker following a three-team tie atop the NFC South. Cincinnati finished 6-11 after winning its first two games. The Buccaneers’ matchup breakdown attributes Cincinnati’s subsequent slide to Joe Burrow’s toe injury.

The Bengals ranked sixth in passing yards per game and 12th in points per game last season. Tampa Bay ranked fifth in rushing yards allowed per game. Those rankings describe different parts of the matchup and do not establish that the Buccaneers can contain Cincinnati’s passing attack.

Personnel changes limit the comparison

Cincinnati’s defense struggled across several major categories in 2025, then added Dexter Lawrence, Jonathan Allen and Boye Mafe among its offseason reinforcements. Tampa Bay also added defensive personnel, including Alex Anzalone and A’Shawn Robinson. Last season’s defensive results offer context, but cannot establish how these changed units will perform together.

Friday’s injury report listed Cincinnati defensive end Shemar Stewart as doubtful with a knee injury. Tampa Bay receiver Jalen McMillan, running back Sean Tucker and tackle Justin Skule were also doubtful; linebacker Christian Rozeboom was questionable. These designations do not confirm absences.

Tee Higgins participated fully Friday. Ja’Marr Chase did not practice, with rest and knee reasons listed. That practice status alone does not establish his availability for Sunday.

Betting decision: Pass

Cincinnati is -205 on the moneyline and -3.5 (-110) against the spread. Tampa Bay is +173 and +3.5 (-110). Both over 50.5 and under 50.5 are priced at -110.

The available information does not establish value on either side or the total. Cincinnati’s favorite status is a market price, not independent proof of a profitable wager. Pass, with no winner or projected score selected.
