Northwestern Wildcats vs Michigan St. Spartans Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 12:00 PM ET

Venue: Spartan Stadium — East Lansing, MI

Article updated Oct 12, 8:23 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Northwestern will beat Michigan State 31-24, with the Wildcats’ balanced offense and 35.4-point scoring average through five games providing the strongest matchup advantage. Over 48.5 (-112) is the best bet, supported by Northwestern’s scoring form and Michigan State’s offensive response against Illinois. The spread is a pass at either side of 7.5 points because the projected margin leaves little cushion.

Northwestern Wildcats vs Michigan St. Spartans prediction and best bet

Northwestern is the pick to win this 2026 college football matchup on Saturday, Oct. 17. Its offense offers the clearest reason: the Wildcats have combined productive passing with a meaningful rushing contribution, giving them several ways to sustain scoring. Michigan State’s comeback against Illinois makes a competitive game more plausible than a comfortable Northwestern cover.

The official wager is Over 48.5 (-112). Both offenses bring encouraging recent performances, although those results deserve different weight: Northwestern dominated Ball State, while Michigan State needed overtime to reach 37 against Illinois. The scoring forecast favors the Over without requiring another 40-point performance from either team.

Northwestern Wildcats outlook

Northwestern beat Ball State 45-14 on Oct. 10, bringing its scoring average to 35.4 points through five games. The Wildcats scored 31 before halftime and reached 88 points across their last two outings. That early production supports a forecast in which they take the initiative, though it should not be treated as a promise against a different opponent.

Aidan Chiles completed 17 of 23 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns against Ball State. He also rushed for 32 yards and a touchdown. Griffin Wilde led the receiving production with eight catches for 144 yards and a score, giving the passing game a substantial contribution from its leading target that afternoon.

Drew Wagner added four receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown, while Alex Honig recorded 48 yards and a score on two catches. Northwestern also outrushed Ball State 164-90 and registered nine tackles for loss. Those contributions strengthen the winning forecast, particularly if defensive disruption creates difficult situations for Michigan State.

Michigan St. Spartans outlook

Michigan State lost 38-37 in overtime to Illinois at Spartan Stadium on Oct. 10. The Spartans trailed 20-7 at halftime and 31-17 early in the fourth quarter, then tied the game with 1:17 remaining in regulation. Their 24-11 second-half advantage shows why an early Northwestern lead would not necessarily settle this matchup.

Jaziun Patterson rushed for 92 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns, adding three catches for 26 yards and another touchdown. Alessio Milivojevic completed 22 of 26 passes for 196 yards and two scores. Those performances give Michigan State a credible route to answering Northwestern through both its running and passing games.

The defensive concern starts with the deficit Michigan State had to overcome, rather than treating all 38 Illinois points as regulation scoring. Pat Fitzgerald also reported multiple injuries after the game, without identifying the players or confirming their availability for Oct. 17. No specific lineup adjustment belongs in the forecast on that basis.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Northwestern can turn its offensive balance into a sustained advantage against Michigan State. Chiles’ rushing contribution adds another consideration for the defense, while the distribution of receiving production makes focusing exclusively on Wilde a potentially costly approach. That is a matchup inference from the Ball State performance, not an established weakness in Michigan State’s coverage.

Michigan State’s best response is to avoid needing another large comeback. Patterson’s involvement as both a runner and receiver gives the Spartans options, but Northwestern’s recent tackles for loss are a reason to temper expectations for uninterrupted scoring.

As of Oct. 12, SportsJaw’s blended moneyline consensus favored Northwestern -330 at 69%, up 19 percentage points from the Oct. 11 snapshot. The spread and total were each split 50-50. The moneyline figure measures consensus support, not Northwestern’s win probability; neither even split supplies a directional betting edge.

Northwestern Wildcats vs Michigan St. Spartans spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Northwestern -7.5 (-110) and Michigan State +7.5 (-110). The projected seven-point Northwestern victory falls short of a favorite cover, but the half-point difference between that forecast and the line is too small to make Michigan State an attractive wager by itself.

Northwestern’s offensive production supports the outright pick. Michigan State’s recovery against Illinois supports caution about the margin. Those competing considerations make the spread less appealing than the total, particularly with no directional advantage in the spread consensus.

Northwestern Wildcats vs Michigan St. Spartans total prediction

Total recommendation: Over 48.5 (-112). Northwestern’s five-game scoring average offers a broader foundation than its latest result alone. Michigan State’s efficient passing and Patterson’s scoring involvement against Illinois supply a reasonable case for the home team contributing enough to push the combined score beyond this number.

The strongest objection is Northwestern’s defensive disruption against Ball State. There is also a meaningful distinction between Michigan State’s 31 regulation points and its 37-point overtime finish. The projection allows for those limits: a 31-24 result totals 55, leaving the Over ahead without assuming either offense repeats its latest final score.

Northwestern Wildcats vs Michigan St. Spartans projected score

Game forecast: Northwestern Wildcats 31, Michigan State Spartans 24. Confidence is medium. Northwestern’s scoring form earns the winning pick, while Michigan State’s productive offensive personnel and comeback against Illinois provide the strongest counterargument.

The forecast favors a competitive Northwestern victory with enough scoring from both teams to clear the total. Both spread sides remain passes. Over 48.5 (-112) is the single official SportsJaw wager.
