New Mexico Lobos vs San Jose St. Spartans Predictions October 31, 2026

Game time: October 31, 2026 at 4:00 PM ET

Venue: CEFCU Stadium — San Jose, CA

Article updated Oct 25, 11:53 PM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

New Mexico will beat San Jose State, with a projected score of Lobos 27, Spartans 14. The strongest matchup advantage is New Mexico's run defense against an offense struggling to extend drives on third down. The Lobos are the stronger team in this forecast, but neither New Mexico -14.5 (-108) nor the 41.5 total offers a convincing wager. The official recommendation is Pass.

New Mexico Lobos vs San Jose St. Spartans prediction and best bet

New Mexico's defensive production makes it the pick to win this Mountain West matchup. The Lobos allow 11.3 points per game, first in FBS, and their strength against the run gives them a credible route to slowing San Jose State. The Spartans' 30.9% third-down conversion rate is a particular concern against a defense allowing opponents to convert just 31.2%.

The best betting decision is Pass. New Mexico must win by at least 15 points to cover -14.5 (-108), a demanding margin after its five-point victory over North Dakota State. A projected 27-14 result favors the Lobos outright but leaves room for San Jose State to stay inside the number. That distinction matters at this price.

SportsJaw moneyline: New Mexico -690; San Jose State +480.

SportsJaw total: Over 41.5 (-112); Under 41.5 (-108). The spread and total are evaluated separately below; neither is an official wager.

New Mexico Lobos outlook

New Mexico's running game gives the forecast an offensive foundation. The Lobos average 210.6 rushing yards, 19th in FBS, and 33:19 of possession per game. Scottre Humphrey has 453 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 95 carries. Those numbers suggest an offense equipped to sustain possessions without needing to rely entirely on its passing game.

Kiefer Sibley provided the largest rushing contribution in the October 24 win over North Dakota State: 91 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. Humphrey added 31 yards and another rushing score. Sibley started that game ahead of Humphrey, while Dorian Patterson and Tripp Walsh started at receiver and tight end, respectively. Those were changes for that game, not confirmed assignments for Saturday.

The defense held North Dakota State to 53 rushing yards on 28 attempts and registered nine tackles for loss. That performance fits season averages of 86.4 rushing yards and 261.0 total yards allowed.

There is also a reason to temper expectations of a comfortable cover. New Mexico won 21-16 despite Austin Brawley's interception return for a touchdown and outgained the Bison only 279-251. The defensive score mattered, and another one should not be built into Saturday's projection.

San Jose St. Spartans outlook

San Jose State's passing production offers its clearest route to challenging the forecast. Luke Weaver has 1,620 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. The Spartans average 362.1 total yards per game, but their 20.4-point scoring average shows why yardage alone is an insufficient reason to expect a strong offensive afternoon.

The October 24 loss at Nevada was particularly discouraging. San Jose State generated 204 yards and converted just one of 14 third downs while Nevada controlled possession for 38:18. Daniel Rolovich and Robert McDaniel played quarterback before Weaver entered in the fourth quarter. Weaver completed six of 10 passes for 91 yards, though that appearance does not confirm who will start against New Mexico.

Dominique McKenzie caught two passes for 60 yards, and Carson Clark contributed five catches for 42 yards. Viliami Teu rushed for 44 yards on 10 carries and scored an 11-yard fourth-quarter touchdown. Those contributions give the Spartans several possible outlets, but the offense needs more sustained drives than it produced at Nevada.

Defensively, San Jose State allows 381.0 yards and 22.5 points per game. That scoring average is a useful counterweight to New Mexico's 37.0-point offense when assessing a spread larger than two touchdowns.

Key matchup factors

Possession is the connecting factor. San Jose State averages 26:04 with the ball, compared with New Mexico's 33:19. If the Lobos sustain their rushing production while forcing third-down stops, the Spartans could have fewer opportunities to recover from an empty drive. That favors New Mexico winning, although fewer possessions can also make a large spread harder to cover.

Turnovers add uncertainty to both markets. New Mexico has a +18 turnover margin, first in FBS, compared with San Jose State's +1. The Lobos have recorded at least two takeaways in every game this season. Their ability to create extra chances strengthens the forecast, but the timing and field position of those takeaways could swing the margin and total substantially.

New Mexico Lobos vs San Jose St. Spartans spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on New Mexico -14.5 (-108) and San Jose State +14.5 (-108). New Mexico's defensive advantage is persuasive, but the projected 13-point margin falls short of the favorite's required 15-point win.

That projection is not enough to make the Spartans a bet either. Their third-down difficulties and New Mexico's takeaway production leave a credible path to a wider result. San Jose State's 22.5 points allowed per game and the Lobos' close latest win argue for caution about laying the points. The competing cases leave neither spread side with a convincing edge.

New Mexico Lobos vs San Jose St. Spartans total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 41.5 (-112) and Under 41.5 (-108). The projected 41 points sit only half a point below the line, too little separation to make the score forecast a compelling Under argument.

New Mexico's run defense, possession profile and San Jose State's third-down struggles favor restrained scoring. The opposing case is meaningful: the Lobos average 37.0 points themselves, and their takeaways can create short fields or defensive scores. Brawley's touchdown last week illustrates that risk. The scoring outlook has enough uncertainty to pass at both supplied prices.

New Mexico Lobos vs San Jose St. Spartans projected score

Game forecast: New Mexico Lobos 27, San Jose State Spartans 14. The Lobos' combination of rushing production, run defense and third-down resistance gives them the stronger overall case. The projection calls for New Mexico to control enough possessions to win without assuming another defensive touchdown or a repeat of its season scoring average.

The strongest counterargument is that San Jose State's passing game can create enough gains to keep this competitive, especially if the Spartans avoid costly turnovers. New Mexico's latest five-point win also cautions against treating separation as automatic. Confidence in the winner is medium. Both the spread and total remain passes, and the single official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass.
