Iowa Hawkeyes vs Northwestern Wildcats Betting Picks & Predictions

Game time: November 7, 2026 at 12:00 AM ET

Venue: Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium — Evanston, IL

Article updated Oct 31, 11:17 PM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Northwestern will beat Iowa 23-20 in our forecast, with Aidan Chiles’ production as a passer and runner giving the Wildcats a slight edge. Iowa’s third shutout of the season offers a strong counterargument, however. Neither Northwestern -2.5 (-115) nor the 42.5 total at -110 offers a convincing betting advantage. The official SportsJaw recommendation is Pass, with low confidence in the game forecast.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Northwestern Wildcats prediction and best bet

Northwestern gets the pick because Chiles presents two ways to challenge an Iowa defense coming off a dominant afternoon. Against Oregon on Oct. 31, he passed for 281 yards and rushed for 93, scoring a touchdown each way. That combination is the strongest reason to give the Wildcats a narrow advantage in this matchup.

Iowa’s response is substantial: a 30-0 victory over Wisconsin, its third shutout of 2026, accompanied by efficient quarterback play. The Hawkeyes have a credible route to an outright win. Northwestern is the forecast selection, but neither side offers enough separation from the supplied spread to merit a wager. The best bet is Pass.

Iowa Hawkeyes outlook

Iowa’s Oct. 31 win over Wisconsin supplies a strong case for taking the Hawkeyes seriously on both sides of the ball. Iowa gained 362 yards and earned 21 first downs, compared with Wisconsin’s 235 yards and nine first downs. Holding the Badgers to 52 rushing yards helped produce a third shutout, giving Iowa more than one isolated scoreless defensive result this season.

Hank Brown completed 20 of 24 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. That performance matters here because Northwestern must contend with an offense coming off accurate, productive passing. Brown’s latest outing gives Iowa a plausible answer if Chiles creates scoring opportunities. The challenge is carrying that efficiency into a different matchup, rather than treating one strong Saturday as a guaranteed repeat.

The defensive assignment also changes. Chiles’ rushing production at Oregon adds a threat beyond the passing game, while Griffin Wilde’s receiving performance demands attention. Iowa’s preferred route in this forecast is to contain the quarterback without giving up large gains through the air. Its Wisconsin performance makes that route credible, although it does not tell us exactly how the Hawkeyes will handle Northwestern’s personnel.

Northwestern Wildcats outlook

Northwestern returns from a 34-26 loss at Oregon with evidence of offensive production and a clear reason for caution. Chiles completed 22 of 38 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown, adding 93 rushing yards and another score. Those numbers show why Iowa must account for him in both phases, even after a game in which the Wildcats fell short.

Wilde caught five passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. His production supplies the receiving component of the Northwestern forecast: if Iowa devotes extra attention to Chiles as a runner, the Wildcats need their passing game to punish the adjustment. That is a possible matchup advantage, not a claim that Iowa will use any particular coverage or defensive plan.

Northwestern’s broader results also deserve consideration. Its four-game winning streak ended at Oregon, and its other defeat was by six points at Indiana on Sept. 25. Its victories include Colorado, Penn State, Rutgers and Michigan State. That record keeps the latest loss in perspective. Still, allowing Oregon 34 points offers no reassurance that Northwestern will control an Iowa offense coming off a 30-point performance. The Wildcats receive a narrow forecast edge, with substantial room for Iowa to overturn it.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Iowa can restrict Chiles’ rushing contribution while still handling Northwestern’s passing threats. His combined 374 passing and rushing yards against Oregon illustrate the scope of that assignment. Iowa’s success against Wisconsin’s running game is encouraging for the Hawkeyes, but the different opponent limits a direct comparison.

The second question is how much of Brown’s accuracy carries over. Another efficient passing game would reduce Northwestern’s room for mistakes and strengthen Iowa’s upset case. These recent performances point toward a competitive game, not a comfortable favorite. The forecast gives a slight preference to Northwestern’s multiple offensive threats while respecting Iowa’s demonstrated ability to keep an opponent off the scoreboard.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Northwestern Wildcats spread prediction

Pass on Northwestern -2.5 (-115) and Iowa +2.5 (-105). The projected three-point Northwestern victory would cover the Wildcats’ line, but only narrowly. That small difference between the forecast margin and the spread is too fragile to justify the price.

Iowa’s defensive results and Brown’s latest performance are meaningful reasons to resist laying points. Conversely, Chiles’ production makes taking Iowa solely for the points unappealing. A close-game forecast leaves both outcomes plausible; there is no persuasive betting advantage on either side at these supplied prices.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Northwestern Wildcats total prediction

Pass on Over 42.5 (-110) and Under 42.5 (-110). The projected 43 points land just above the total, a difference too small to support an Over wager with confidence.

Iowa’s third shutout strengthens the lower-scoring case, while Brown’s two touchdown passes and Northwestern’s 26 points at Oregon argue against assuming an offensive struggle. Chiles and Wilde provide a plausible route to scoring even against a defense coming off a shutout. The tension between those performances warrants a Pass rather than treating the score projection as proof of value.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Northwestern Wildcats Projected Score & Betting Picks

Game forecast: Northwestern 23, Iowa 20. Chiles’ ability to contribute substantial yardage through the air and on the ground gives the Wildcats the deciding edge in this projection. Wilde’s recent receiving production adds another reason to expect Northwestern to find enough offense.

The strongest counterargument is Iowa’s combination of defensive shutouts and Brown’s efficient performance against Wisconsin. If those strengths carry over, Iowa can reverse the result without requiring an unlikely turn of events. Confidence is low because the evidence supports credible paths for both teams.

The forecast selects Northwestern to win. The betting decision remains separate: Pass on the spread, Pass on the total, and Pass as the single official SportsJaw wager.
