Dallas Cowboys vs Houston Texans Predictions October 4, 2026

Game time: October 4, 2026 at 1:00 PM ET

Venue: NRG Stadium — Houston, TX

The Houston Texans will beat the Dallas Cowboys 27-24 in our forecast for October 4, 2026. Houston’s defensive front against a recently improved Dallas running game is the strongest matchup reason, with the Cowboys’ injuries adding uncertainty. Confidence is low: Houston -2.5 (-110) offers too little margin for a spread wager, and the total of 48 is also a Pass.

Dallas Cowboys vs Houston Texans prediction and best bet

Houston gets the nod in this Week 4 matchup of the 2026 NFL season because its defensive front presents a challenge to Dallas’ clearest recent improvement. Javonte Williams helped revive the Cowboys’ running game against Baltimore, but the Dallas report on that performance also highlighted the strength of Houston’s front.

The Cowboys’ injuries tilt a close forecast toward the Texans. Three Dallas players left the September 27 game and could not return, adding uncertainty to preparations for Houston. Their availability still matters more than the length of the injury list alone.

The official best bet is Pass. A narrow Houston victory is the forecast, but neither the spread nor the total offers a convincing betting edge.

Dallas Cowboys outlook

Dallas showed resilience in its 34-31 loss to Baltimore in Rio de Janeiro on September 27. The Cowboys opened a 10-0 lead, fell behind by multiple scores at halftime and later regained the lead. Baltimore ultimately won on a field goal as time expired. The comeback gives Dallas a credible route to another competitive game, although one result says little about how reliably it can sustain that offense.

Williams supplied the most concrete encouragement: 19 carries, 98 yards and one touchdown, with a reported average of 5.2 yards per carry. Dallas had struggled to establish the run in its first two games. Repeating that production would make Houston work harder to control possessions. Finishing remains part of the challenge after Dallas was stopped short following first-and-goal from Baltimore’s 2-yard line late in the fourth quarter.

Jalen Thompson suffered a hamstring injury, Shavon Revel a knee injury and Jonathan Bullard a calf injury in Rio; none returned. Dallas also played without DeMarvion Overshown, Malik Hooker and P.J. Locke. Locke’s September 26 injured-reserve designation carried an expectation of at least four more weeks out. The other absences against Baltimore should not automatically become Houston-game exclusions.

Houston Texans outlook

Houston’s case begins with its defensive front. The Cowboys’ September 27 report on Williams described that unit as stout, making the line of scrimmage a reasonable focus for this forecast. That is a qualitative assessment, however, rather than a statistical ranking. It supports expecting resistance to Dallas’ rushing attack without assuming the Texans will shut it down.

The task for Houston is to keep Williams’ Baltimore performance from dictating this game. If Dallas again gets useful yardage from its carries, the Texans could struggle to create the separation needed to reward favorite bettors. If Houston interrupts that rhythm, it can make Dallas depend more heavily on converting difficult downs. Those are matchup possibilities, not established tendencies from Houston’s recent results.

The Texans have a confirmed personnel loss of their own. They placed linebacker Jake Hummel on Reserve/Injured on September 26. The same release elevated receiver Lewis Bond and safety George Odum from the practice squad for Week 3 at Indianapolis. Those elevations were specific to that game and should not be treated as confirmed October 4 roles. With little recent Houston offensive detail to judge, the forecast stays close and confidence remains low.

Key matchup factors

Dallas faces a seven-day turnaround between its game in Rio and the Houston matchup. The Cowboys’ report described their return to Texas and subsequent trip to face the Texans. Travel adds preparation demands, but there is no measured fatigue effect to attach to the projected margin.

The September 28 consensus update favors Dallas +2.5 (-110) at 89%, with a combined count of 534-66. Those counts incorporate a modeled sportsbook sample and SportsJaw participation; they are not observed sportsbook ticket totals or a win probability. Dallas’ popularity offers context, not a reason by itself to back Houston. Williams sustaining his improvement and the injured Cowboys’ eventual availability are more useful football considerations.

Dallas Cowboys vs Houston Texans spread prediction

Pass on Dallas Cowboys +2.5 (-110) and Houston Texans -2.5 (-110). The projected three-point Houston win would cover the favorite’s spread, but only by half a point. That small difference is too sensitive to ordinary forecasting error to justify laying the points.

Dallas’ renewed rushing production is the strongest argument against Houston, while the Cowboys’ injury uncertainty complicates backing the underdog. The Texans remain the winner selection because of the anticipated challenge their front presents. Neither side earns an official spread recommendation at these prices.

Dallas Cowboys vs Houston Texans total prediction

Pass on Over 48 (-108) and Under 48 (-110). The projection totals 51 points, putting the forecast above the line, but an Over wager needs more than that arithmetic. Dallas’ 31 points against Baltimore offer encouragement; Houston’s expected resistance to the run supplies a counterargument.

There is too little recent Houston scoring detail to make either direction compelling. The consensus favors Over 47.5 (-112) at 62%, a different line and price from SportsJaw’s Over 48 (-108). That preference is context, not evidence that the higher total is worth betting.

Dallas Cowboys vs Houston Texans projected score

Game forecast: Houston Texans 27, Dallas Cowboys 24. Houston’s defensive front gets the deciding weight in a close matchup, with Dallas’ injury concerns adding to the uncertainty around another road performance.

The strongest counterargument is Williams. His 98-yard rushing game gave Dallas something tangible to build on, and the Cowboys recovered from a multi-score halftime deficit against Baltimore before losing at the final whistle. They have a credible path to overturning this prediction.

Confidence is low because the Houston case relies more on a qualitative matchup assessment than a detailed statistical advantage. The official SportsJaw wager is Pass, with separate passes on both the supplied spread and total despite a decisive winner selection.
