Game time: October 4, 2026 at 8:20 PM ET

Venue: Bank of America Stadium — Charlotte, NC

Article updated Sep 29, 11:31 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

The Detroit Lions will beat the Carolina Panthers, Lions 30, Panthers 23, with Jared Goff’s turnover-free start and Carolina’s secondary injuries providing the strongest matchup advantage. Detroit Lions -3.5 (-110) is an actionable spread wager at the supplied SportsJaw price. Confidence is medium because Bryce Young’s passing production gives Carolina a credible response. The total at 50.5 is a Pass.

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers prediction and best bet

Detroit’s offensive balance makes the Lions the pick for this Oct. 4, 2026 NFL matchup. Goff has started the season with three turnover-free games, and Jahmyr Gibbs contributed as both a runner and receiver in the 31-24 victory over the Jets. Carolina must prepare for that combination while dealing with Jaycee Horn’s quad injury and uncertainty surrounding Mike Jackson’s groin injury.

The best bet is Detroit Lions -3.5 (-110). The case rests on efficient quarterback play against an injured secondary, with Detroit’s rushing production adding another route to a cover. Young’s passing gives the Panthers a chance to answer, but Detroit has the stronger offensive foundation for this forecast.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Game: Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers, Oct. 4, 2026, in Week 4 of the NFL season.

Broadcast: NBC.

Recent results: Detroit improved to 2-1 by beating the Jets 31-24. Carolina lost 21-18 at Cleveland.

Quarterback update: Panthers coach Dave Canales said on Sept. 28 that he expected Bryce Young to play.

SportsJaw spread: Detroit -3.5 (-110); Carolina +3.5 (-108).

SportsJaw moneyline: Detroit -190; Carolina +165. SportsJaw total: Over 50.5 (-108); Under 50.5 (-106).

Detroit Lions outlook

Goff’s Sept. 27 performance against the Jets supplies the clearest recent reason to favor Detroit. He completed 25 of 32 attempts for 269 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, finishing with a 122.5 passer rating. That accuracy makes Carolina’s coverage injuries especially relevant: the Panthers face a quarterback coming off a game in which relatively few throws went unfinished.

The pattern extends beyond one afternoon. Detroit’s team notebook reported at least 800 passing yards, eight touchdown passes, no interceptions and a completion rate of at least 70 percent through three games. Goff also had gone three straight games without a turnover. Those results support confidence in the offense, although another clean game remains a projection.

Gibbs carried 20 times for 99 yards and two touchdowns against New York, adding seven catches for 65 yards and another touchdown. Detroit rushed for 131 yards at 4.4 yards per carry against a defense that entered allowing 65.5 rushing yards per game.

The caution is the finish. New York still had a comeback opportunity before Chuck Clark’s late sack forced a fumble that Jack Campbell recovered. Detroit earned the win, but that ending argues against treating a road cover as routine.

Carolina Panthers outlook

Young gives Carolina a substantial counterweight to Detroit’s offensive case. The Panthers reported that he led the NFL with 939 passing yards after Week 3. At Cleveland, he completed 26 of 48 passes for 291 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He returned after a visit to the medical tent, but Canales said imaging would follow the lower-body issue. The coach expected him to play against Detroit.

Carolina needs more help from its ground game. The Panthers ran 23 times for 98 yards against Cleveland, including only 18 rushing yards before halftime. Chuba Hubbard supplied 82 yards on 19 carries, while AJ Dillon gained 16 on four attempts. Through Week 3, Carolina ranked 21st in rushing offense at 97.0 yards per game.

The injury picture adds uncertainty on both sides of the ball. Horn was set to miss time with a quad injury, and Jackson’s timeline awaited further evaluation after he left the Cleveland game. Canales expected linebacker Devin Lloyd back from a calf issue and described safety Nick Scott’s rib injury as potentially playable. Receiver Xavier Legette was day-to-day with a knee issue. Lloyd’s anticipated return is encouraging, but Carolina’s coverage concerns remain central to the matchup.

Key matchup factors

The most consequential interaction is Goff against Carolina’s injured secondary. Detroit’s passing efficiency gives the Lions a plausible way to exploit those absences without requiring the running game to carry the offense. Conversely, Young’s production is the strongest reason to expect Carolina to remain competitive.

Detroit held the Jets to 58 rushing yards, a relevant recent result against Carolina’s struggling ground game, though one opponent is no guarantee of another.

As of Sept. 29 at 15:14 UTC, SportsJaw’s combined spread consensus favored Detroit at 66 percent, with modeled equivalent counts of 396 to 204. Those counts blend a modeled sportsbook sample with SportsJaw participation; they are not observed sportsbook tickets or a win probability.

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers spread prediction

Spread pick: Detroit Lions -3.5 (-110). Goff’s three-game ball security, Gibbs’ recent rushing and receiving production, and Carolina’s secondary injuries justify backing Detroit beyond a field-goal margin. A seven-point forecast leaves room above the supplied spread, though the matchup evidence matters more than that arithmetic.

Carolina +3.5 (-108) offers protection if Young keeps the game close. Detroit allowed 24 points last week, so that possibility deserves weight. Still, Carolina’s uneven rushing production and defensive injury concerns make the Lions the preferred spread side at the quoted price.

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 50.5 (-108) and Under 50.5 (-106). The projected 53 points lean toward a higher-scoring game, but a 2.5-point difference is too fragile to make the Over the official wager.

Detroit’s passing form and Carolina’s secondary injuries favor scoring. Young’s passing yardage adds to that case, while his health and Carolina’s limited rushing output introduce meaningful uncertainty. The combined consensus favored Over at 85 percent, up 14 percentage points from the Sept. 28 snapshot. Popularity alone adds no scoring evidence, and it is not a reason to fade the Over either.

Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers projected score

Game forecast: Detroit Lions 30, Carolina Panthers 23. Detroit gets the nod because its recent offense has combined accurate passing, ball security and productive work from Gibbs. Carolina’s injuries at cornerback strengthen that advantage, while its rushing difficulties could leave Young responsible for much of the response.

The strongest counterargument is Young himself. His league-leading passing yardage and return to action against Cleveland give Carolina a credible route to a close finish. Detroit’s seven-point win over the Jets also leaves room for caution about the defense.

Confidence is medium: a supported edge with meaningful resistance. Detroit Lions -3.5 (-110) is the single official SportsJaw wager. The total at 50.5 remains a Pass.
