Kansas Jayhawks vs Kansas St. Wildcats Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 12:00 PM ET

Venue: Bill Snyder Family Stadium — Manhattan, KS

Article updated Oct 12, 11:55 PM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Kansas State will beat Kansas 30-23 in our Oct. 17 forecast, with its pass defense providing the strongest matchup advantage against a Jayhawks offense coming off a difficult rushing performance. Kansas State -4.5 (-110) is the best bet at the supplied SportsJaw price. Confidence is medium because the Wildcats’ defensive struggles against Houston give Kansas a credible path to an upset.

Kansas Jayhawks vs Kansas St. Wildcats prediction and best bet

Kansas State’s combination of passing defense and offensive third-down efficiency earns the pick in this 2026 college football matchup. Both official team previews list the Wildcats at 133.4 passing yards allowed per game and a 61.6% third-down conversion rate. Those strengths offer a plausible route to controlling possessions and winning by more than the 4.5-point spread.

The best bet is Kansas State -4.5 (-110), with medium confidence. Kansas showed enough passing production at Utah to challenge that forecast, and Kansas State’s latest performance was a substantial setback. The Wildcats still get the edge, but the recommendation rests on their broader production rather than an assumption that the rivalry will follow its familiar pattern.

Kansas Jayhawks outlook

Kansas lost 41-24 at Utah on Oct. 10, but Isaiah Marshall supplied a meaningful passing threat. He completed 19 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, adding a rushing touchdown. Nik McMillan contributed four catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Marshall enters with 1,143 passing yards, eight touchdown passes and four interceptions, plus 255 rushing yards on 60 attempts. McMillan leads Kansas with 18 catches, 345 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. Their connection gives the Jayhawks a way to score even when their ground game struggles.

The trouble at Utah extended beyond finishing drives. Kansas rushed for just 58 yards, surrendered 287 rushing yards and was outgained 545-391. Utah possessed the ball for 39:04. Kansas needs a more balanced performance to keep Marshall from carrying so much of the offensive burden.

Defensive end Leroy Harris III offers a potential response. He recorded two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss at Utah. His season totals include a Big 12-leading nine solo tackles for loss, 9.5 total tackles for loss and three sacks.

Kansas St. Wildcats outlook

Avery Johnson supplies Kansas State with a threat through the air and on the ground. He has 1,092 passing yards, nine touchdown passes and three interceptions, along with a team-leading 330 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. The Wildcats’ official preview identifies him as a third-year starter with 31 consecutive starts.

Rodney Fields Jr. adds 320 rushing yards and four touchdowns at 5.1 yards per carry. Jaron Tibbs has 20 receptions for 201 yards and two touchdowns. That distribution gives Kansas State several options for testing a Kansas defense coming off a difficult day against the run.

The Wildcats also have their own problems to address after losing 35-16 at home to Houston on Oct. 10. Houston outgained them 475-299, with 242 passing yards and 233 rushing yards. Those results are a substantial counterweight to Kansas State’s season passing-defense ranking of third nationally.

Linebacker Gabe Powers, who has 24 tackles through five games, exited the Houston game with an injury. Kansas State’s Oct. 12 preview did not give his status for Kansas, so his availability remains an uncertainty.

Key matchup factors

Protection against disruption could decide whether Kansas can force the Wildcats off schedule. Kansas State has allowed only two sacks this season. Harris presents a challenge to that protection, but his recent success alone is no guarantee that Kansas can consistently pressure Johnson.

Kansas State’s third-down offense has converted 45 of 73 attempts, ranking second nationally. Sustaining drives would help the Wildcats keep Marshall on the sideline. Still, that offensive rate should not be confused with a proven advantage against Kansas on every third-down situation.

This is the teams’ 124th meeting. Kansas State has won the last 17, while Kansas leads the full series 64-54-5. The streak supplies context, but current protection, quarterback play and defensive execution carry more weight in this forecast.

Kansas Jayhawks vs Kansas St. Wildcats spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Kansas State -4.5 (-110). A seven-point projected victory leaves a modest cushion over the required five-point winning margin. Johnson’s rushing production and the Wildcats’ ability to extend possessions make laying this number reasonable.

Kansas +4.5 (-110) has a credible case if Marshall carries his Utah passing form into Manhattan or the Wildcats repeat their defensive breakdowns against Houston. Those risks limit confidence. The preference remains Kansas State because its protection and third-down execution offer complementary ways to sustain the offense while its pass defense challenges Kansas’ recent source of production.

Kansas Jayhawks vs Kansas St. Wildcats total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on both Over 55.5 (-110) and Under 55.5 (-110). The forecast totals 53 points, but that small gap is not enough to make the Under an official wager.

Both teams surrendered at least 35 points in their latest games, and both quarterbacks contribute as runners and passers. Those factors favor scoring opportunities. Kansas State’s season pass-defense numbers pull the other way, while extended drives could produce either touchdowns or fewer possessions. The total is less convincing than the spread.

Kansas Jayhawks vs Kansas St. Wildcats projected score

Game forecast: Kansas State 30, Kansas 23. Expect Johnson’s versatility and the Wildcats’ offensive efficiency to deliver the winning margin, with Marshall generating enough offense to keep Kansas competitive.

The strongest counterargument is Houston’s success against Kansas State in both phases of offense. That performance prevents high confidence in the Wildcats’ defense. Confidence is medium, and the single official SportsJaw wager is Kansas State -4.5 (-110) on the spread. The total remains a Pass at 55.5 (-110).
