Oklahoma St. Cowboys vs Houston Cougars Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 7:30 PM ET

Venue: TDECU Stadium — Houston, TX

Article updated Oct 13, 12:39 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Houston is the pick to beat Oklahoma State, 35-31, with the Cougars’ balance on offense providing the strongest reason for the forecast. Their latest win featured productive passing and rushing alongside a strong defensive effort. Oklahoma State’s efficient offense makes this a close call, however, and neither the supplied spread nor total offers a strong enough edge for an official wager.

Oklahoma St. Cowboys vs Houston Cougars prediction and best bet

Houston gets the nod because its October 10 performance against Kansas State showed several ways to control a game. The Cougars won 35-16 while producing 475 yards and allowing 299. That combination gives Houston a slight advantage in this October 17, 2026 college football matchup.

Oklahoma State offers a substantial counterargument after beating UCF 42-28. The Cowboys scored efficiently and defended the run well, two qualities that could disrupt Houston’s balance. The forecast is Houston 35, Oklahoma State 31, with low confidence. The official betting decision is Pass: a narrow projected result alone is not enough to make either market a worthwhile wager.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Oklahoma St. Cowboys outlook

Oklahoma State improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play with its October 10 win over UCF. Drew Mestemaker threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns, added a rushing touchdown and converted a two-point attempt. His production is the clearest reason to expect the Cowboys to challenge Houston through the air.

The Cowboys gained 414 yards on 60 plays, averaging 6.9 yards per snap. Justin Bowick contributed 98 receiving yards, while Caleb Hawkins supplied 83 rushing yards. Those contributions suggest Houston will need to account for more than the quarterback, although one productive afternoon is not a guarantee of another.

Oklahoma State also finished strongly. After a 21-21 halftime tie, it outscored UCF 21-7. Defensively, the Cowboys held UCF to 110 rushing yards and 2.7 yards per carry. That performance makes their front an intriguing test for Houston, but repeating it against a different offense remains the challenge.

Houston Cougars outlook

Houston’s October 10 road victory in Manhattan featured a productive connection between Conner Weigman and Patrick Overmyer. Weigman completed 19 of 30 passes for 242 yards and four touchdowns. Overmyer caught eight passes for 83 yards and all four touchdown receptions.

The running game gave that passing combination substantial support. Houston rushed for 233 yards, with Re'Shaun Sanford gaining 90 on 20 carries and Makhi Hughes adding 78 and a touchdown on 14 attempts. Those two backs offer different personnel options, although their results against Kansas State do not predict how Oklahoma State will defend them.

Houston possessed the ball for nearly 10 minutes longer than Kansas State. Paired with its defensive yardage advantage, that was a convincing performance. The next test is whether the Cougars can maintain that control against an opponent that just turned a relatively modest play count into 42 points.

Key matchup factors

The central question is how much Houston can gain on the ground. If Oklahoma State reproduces its recent run defense, Weigman may need to carry more of the offense. If Houston keeps both phases productive, the Cowboys will have fewer opportunities to concentrate on the passing game. That is the main matchup behind the Houston forecast.

Possession and efficiency also deserve separate treatment. Houston controlled the ball in its latest win, while Oklahoma State needed 23 fewer plays than UCF to produce more yards. Sustained drives could help Houston, but possession alone would not protect it from an efficient Cowboys offense.

As of October 13, SportsJaw’s blended consensus favored Oklahoma State +4.5 (-109) at 82%, Oklahoma State +163 at 67%, and Over 61.5 (-110) at 75%. These are selection shares, not win probabilities or measures of forecast confidence. The spread preference fits a competitive game; it does not independently show that the price is favorable.

Oklahoma St. Cowboys vs Houston Cougars spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Oklahoma State +4.5 (-109) and Houston -4.5 (-111). The projected four-point Houston victory falls on the Cowboys’ side of the spread, but only by half a point. That is a fragile distinction for a forecast built around each team’s latest game.

Houston needs to win by at least five points to cover, not by more than one possession. Its balanced production makes that outcome plausible. Oklahoma State’s passing performance and run defense make taking the points tempting, but the evidence leaves too much room on either side of this number.

Oklahoma St. Cowboys vs Houston Cougars total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 61.5 (-110) and Under 61.5 (-110). The projected score totals 66 points, so the forecast points toward the Over. Both teams enter after productive offensive performances, giving a higher-scoring game a reasonable path.

The defensive results deserve equal weight. Houston limited Kansas State’s overall yardage, and Oklahoma State restricted UCF’s rushing production. Those performances create a credible path to fewer points if either defense repeats its success. The 75% consensus preference for Over is a sentiment signal, not an independent scoring projection.

Oklahoma St. Cowboys vs Houston Cougars projected score

Game forecast: Houston Cougars 35, Oklahoma State Cowboys 31. Houston’s combination of rushing support, touchdown production through the air and defensive control earns the slight edge. Oklahoma State’s efficient passing offense and recent resistance against the run are the strongest reasons the Cowboys could overturn that prediction.

Confidence: Low. Both teams showed useful strengths against different opponents, leaving a narrow margin between them. Houston is the projected winner, but neither spread nor total has a demonstrated betting edge at the supplied prices. Official SportsJaw wager: Pass.
