Kent St. Golden Flashes vs South Florida Bulls Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 7:00 PM ET

Venue: Raymond James Stadium — Tampa, FL

Article updated Oct 13, 12:27 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

South Florida will beat Kent State, with a projected score of Bulls 30, Golden Flashes 13. D.J. Crowther’s productive rushing gives South Florida the stronger offensive foundation against a team coming off protection and third-down problems. The supplied South Florida -20.5 spread and 45.5 total offer no compelling wager, so the official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass.

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs South Florida Bulls prediction and best bet

South Florida is the pick because its offensive production offers a firmer foundation for this forecast. Crowther averaged 5.1 yards per carry with seven rushing touchdowns through six games, while Michael Van Buren opened the season with 152 consecutive pass attempts without an interception. Those are useful reasons to favor the Bulls beyond their last result.

Kent State’s most recent performance raises broader concerns about sustaining drives. The Golden Flashes lost 38-7 at Western Michigan on Oct. 10, struggling to protect their quarterback and convert third downs. South Florida gets the nod with medium confidence, but its own defensive vulnerability keeps the official wager at Pass.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Date and event: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. Kent St. Golden Flashes at South Florida Bulls, 2026 college football.

Venue: Raymond James Stadium. This is South Florida’s Homecoming game.

Records: South Florida enters 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the American Conference. Kent State is 2-4 overall and 1-2 in MAC play.

SportsJaw moneyline odds: Kent State +900; South Florida -1,400.

SportsJaw spread odds: Kent State +20.5 (-105); South Florida -20.5 (-115).

SportsJaw total odds: Over 45.5 (-110); Under 45.5 (-108).

Kent St. Golden Flashes outlook

Wayne Harris supplied the brightest part of Kent State’s loss at Western Michigan. His 11 receptions and 164 receiving yards were career highs, and he accounted for more than half of the team’s 223 passing yards. That performance gives the Golden Flashes a receiving threat to build around, even after a difficult offensive afternoon.

Dru DeShields completed 19 of 35 passes for 223 yards and one touchdown, but took five sacks. Brendyn Smith caught his first collegiate touchdown on a 20-yard throw from DeShields. Kent State generated individual passing highlights without turning them into enough scoring drives.

The supporting numbers explain that gap. Kent State rushed for 75 yards, with Mason King contributing 36 on 13 carries, and converted three of 13 third downs. Eleven penalties cost another 100 yards. Better protection and fewer penalties would give Harris’s production a greater chance to matter on the scoreboard.

South Florida Bulls outlook

South Florida’s Oct. 8 trip to UTSA ended in a 31-24 defeat. Van Buren completed 16 of 29 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. His interception-free opening stretch is encouraging for the passing game, although it should not be treated as a measure of every kind of turnover or offensive mistake.

Crowther contributed in both phases, rushing 20 times for 83 yards and a touchdown while catching an 11-yard touchdown pass that gave the Bulls a fourth-quarter lead. His production through six games makes him the most persuasive reason to expect South Florida to build a successful offensive plan here.

The defensive concern is substantial. UTSA gained 277 rushing yards, including 174 after halftime. South Florida’s offense had put the team ahead late, yet the Bulls still lost. That result is a reason to be cautious about expecting them to protect a large margin.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Kent State can exploit South Florida’s recent weakness on the ground. The Bulls’ difficulty stopping UTSA creates an opportunity, but Kent State’s own rushing performance offers little encouragement that it will take full advantage. I expect some offensive improvement from the Golden Flashes without projecting a complete turnaround.

Protection is the other major factor. Harris can make the passing game productive when DeShields has time, but another afternoon disrupted by sacks would make scoring consistently difficult. The forecast depends on Kent State continuing to encounter offensive obstacles; it does not assume South Florida will reproduce Western Michigan’s pass rush.

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs South Florida Bulls spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on South Florida Bulls -20.5 (-115) and Kent St. Golden Flashes +20.5 (-105).

The projected 17-point margin favors Kent State relative to the spread, but the cushion is modest given the uncertainty around both teams. Kent State’s protection problems and penalties could turn a manageable deficit into a much larger one.

South Florida also needs more than a comfortable victory to cover this price. Its recent run defense makes that extra requirement difficult to trust. The forecast puts the Bulls ahead throughout the final assessment, while leaving neither spread side strong enough for a wager.

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs South Florida Bulls total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 45.5 (-110) and Under 45.5 (-108).

The projected 43 points sit 2.5 below the total. Kent State’s recent difficulty extending possessions is the main argument for Under 45.5, but South Florida’s rushing defense introduces a meaningful counterargument. A more effective Golden Flashes ground game could help them finish additional drives.

Those possibilities leave a narrow projected edge with considerable uncertainty. One more scoring possession could move the result above 45.5, so the score forecast is not enough to justify an Under wager.

Kent St. Golden Flashes vs South Florida Bulls projected score

Game forecast: South Florida Bulls 30, Kent St. Golden Flashes 13. Confidence: medium.

Crowther’s sustained production is the strongest reason to select South Florida, with Kent State’s recent offensive breakdowns reinforcing that choice. The strongest counterargument is the Bulls’ vulnerability against the run, especially after halftime at UTSA. That concern matters more to the size of the projected victory than to the winner selection. The single official SportsJaw wager is Pass.
