Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs California Golden Bears Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 10:30 PM ET

Venue: California Memorial Stadium — Berkeley, CA

Article updated Oct 12, 9:57 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Wake Forest will beat California 31-24, with its recent road success and efficient passing performance giving the Demon Deacons the edge. California’s productive first start from Jackson Brousseau makes a comfortable victory less certain. At Wake Forest -9.5 (-112) and a total of 53.5 (-110), neither market offers a convincing betting advantage. The official recommendation is Pass.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs California Golden Bears prediction and best bet

Wake Forest is the pick to win, but the best betting decision is Pass. The Demon Deacons have won at Purdue, Louisville and NC State this season, giving the forecast more substance than their latest result alone. Their 38-14 victory in Raleigh on Oct. 10 also supplied an encouraging combination of passing efficiency and defensive resistance.

California presents a meaningful obstacle to laying 9.5 points. The Bears beat Virginia Tech 25-20 with a first-time starting quarterback who passed for 321 yards. Wake Forest gets the edge outright; California’s offensive response keeps the projected margin at seven points.

SportsJaw moneyline: Wake Forest -360; California +285. Spread: Wake Forest -9.5 (-112); California +9.5 (-108). Total: Over 53.5 (-110); Under 53.5 (-110).

Wake Forest Demon Deacons outlook

Gio Lopez completed 26 of 33 passes for 303 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions against NC State. He also rushed for a touchdown. That efficient performance is the strongest offensive reason to favor Wake Forest, particularly because the production came on the road.

Jack Foley caught eight passes for a career-high 156 yards and a touchdown. Carlos Hernandez added 12 receptions for a career-high 117 yards and a score. Their different catch and yardage totals suggest Wake Forest had more than one productive route through that particular defense, although another opponent brings a different coverage challenge.

The Demon Deacons finished with 387 total yards and allowed 258. Langston Hardy contributed eight tackles, two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Wake Forest trailed 14-10 at halftime before winning the second half 28-0. That turnaround strengthens the forecast, while the halftime deficit cautions against expecting immediate control.

California Golden Bears outlook

Brousseau made his first start against Virginia Tech with Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele injured. He completed 29 of 43 passes for 321 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. California’s quarterback change therefore came with a productive immediate result, rather than an obvious collapse in passing output.

Chase Hendricks caught seven passes for 94 yards, including a 42-yard reception. Ian Strong contributed five catches for 97 yards, his highest receiving total as a Golden Bear. Those performances give California credible receiving options for another competitive game.

Adam Mohammed missed a second consecutive game with an injury. In his first start, Ashten Emory produced 76 total yards and two rushing touchdowns, including the winning two-yard score with 18 seconds remaining. Those injury details describe Oct. 10; they do not confirm either player’s availability against Wake Forest.

California also registered nine tackles for loss. Cam Sydney broke up Virginia Tech’s final pass in the end zone, completing a victory that required execution on both sides of the ball in the closing seconds.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether California can interrupt Wake Forest’s passing rhythm. Tackles for loss offer one sign of defensive disruption, but they are not interchangeable with sacks or evidence of consistent quarterback pressure. California must turn that disruptive potential into difficult passing situations for Lopez.

The quarterback comparison is closer than the spread might suggest. Both quarterbacks avoided interceptions in their latest games, and Brousseau passed for more yards. Lopez produced more passing touchdowns. Those results favor Wake Forest’s recent scoring efficiency without proving a large talent gap.

Wake Forest’s road wins strengthen its case to handle another trip. California’s successful adjustment to missing offensive starters supplies the strongest reason to keep the expected margin modest.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs California Golden Bears spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Wake Forest -9.5 (-112) and California +9.5 (-108). Wake Forest needs a double-digit win to cover. Its latest victory makes that outcome plausible, but California’s productive passing performance argues against treating it as the default.

The 31-24 forecast falls on California’s side of the spread. That directional preference is too slight for an official wager: a single projected score is not a precise margin estimate, and these recent games came against different opponents.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs California Golden Bears total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 53.5 (-110) and Under 53.5 (-110). The projected 55 points sit just above the line. Both passing performances suggest scoring opportunities, but the distance between the forecast and the total is small.

Wake Forest’s scoreless defensive second half and California’s tackles for loss offer competing reasons for stalled possessions. Neither result establishes a dependable scoring pace for this matchup. There is no strong enough edge to turn the modest Over preference into a bet.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs California Golden Bears projected score

Game forecast: Wake Forest Demon Deacons 31, California Golden Bears 24. Wake Forest’s road results and Lopez’s recent efficiency make it the projected winner. Brousseau’s successful debut is the strongest counterargument and keeps a California victory credible.

Confidence: low. The pick favors Wake Forest, but the margin is fragile with California’s upcoming offensive personnel unsettled. Both the spread and total are passes at the supplied prices. Official SportsJaw wager: Pass.
