Michigan will beat Rutgers, with a projected score of Michigan 23, Rutgers 17. The Wolverines’ third-ranked total defense supplies the strongest edge, reinforced by holding Indiana to 212 yards. Their offensive struggles make a comfortable victory less convincing. Neither the supplied Michigan -14 (-110) spread nor the 46.5 total offers a sufficiently strong betting case, so the official wager is Pass.

Michigan Wolverines vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights prediction and best bet

Michigan’s defense gives the Wolverines the advantage in this Oct. 31 college football matchup. They rank seventh nationally in pass defense and eighth in first downs allowed alongside their third-place total-defense ranking. That combination makes Michigan the pick against a Rutgers team coming off a 42-14 defeat at Northwestern.

The distinction is between winning and winning comfortably. Michigan scored six points against Indiana despite reaching the red zone four times. Rutgers counters with Antwan Raymond’s rushing production and KJ Duff’s receiving threat, enough to make a close game plausible. The forecast is Michigan 23, Rutgers 17, with low confidence. The best betting decision is Pass after evaluating the spread and total separately.

Michigan Wolverines outlook

Michigan’s 13-6 overtime loss to Indiana on Oct. 24 captured the tension behind this forecast. The Wolverines allowed 212 total yards, including 81 passing yards, but gained only 224 themselves. Their 33:44 of possession produced neither a touchdown nor a victory. Defensive resistance was substantial; offensive separation was missing.

Tommy Carr completed 20 of 32 passes for 167 yards, with no touchdown passes and one interception. Michigan rushed for 57 yards and punted five times. Six points from four red-zone trips is the clearest reason to hesitate over a large spread, although one game should not become an automatic prediction of another touchdown drought.

JJ Buchanan leads Michigan with 33 catches for 539 yards and four touchdowns. He offers a productive receiving option, while the team’s 35-for-91 third-down conversion rate, 38.5%, suggests room for improvement in extending drives. Michigan has converted seven of 10 fourth-down attempts, a much smaller sample.

Troy Bowles leads the defense with 55 tackles and five tackles for loss. Against Indiana, Chris Bracy recorded 13 tackles and Zeke Berry returned an interception 37 yards. Those contributions reinforce the defensive case, but Michigan still needs more from its offense to turn stops into a winning margin.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights outlook

Rutgers’ loss at Northwestern featured productive rushing within a game that was already 28-6 at halftime. Raymond finished with 150 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Clay Thevenin added 116 yards on 14 carries. Rutgers had two 100-yard rushers in one game for the first time since 2023, yet finished with only 14 points.

Raymond’s performance was his fourth 100-yard rushing game of 2026. He averages 92.6 yards per game, ranking 19th nationally. That season production gives the rushing case more substance than a single afternoon, although matching those results against Michigan would be a meaningful test.

Duff provides the strongest receiving counterargument to a Michigan-controlled game. He has nine receiving touchdowns and averages 110.6 receiving yards and 6.43 catches per game, ranking fifth, seventh and 18th nationally in those categories. His 13 contested catches suggest Rutgers has an option even when a defender stays close.

Rutgers also ranks second nationally in fewest penalty yards per game at 29.57 and 17th in net punting at 42.74. Discipline and field position could help keep the margin manageable. Still, last week’s rushing totals did not prevent a 28-point loss. Rutgers needs productive possessions to translate into points and a better result on defense.

Key matchup factors

The central question is how much Rutgers can score against Michigan’s defense. Raymond offers a rushing threat, while Duff tests a pass defense ranked seventh nationally. Success in either area could force Michigan to win through offensive execution rather than rely on repeated stops. Neither matchup is an automatic victory for the Wolverines.

Field position adds another complication. Rutgers’ net punting and low penalty yardage could make Michigan earn longer scoring drives. Conversely, Rutgers just conceded 42 points, so Michigan’s six-point performance against Indiana need not repeat. Michigan’s 9-1 series lead is historical context; the current defensive rankings and recent offensive shortcomings carry more weight in this forecast.

Michigan Wolverines vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Michigan Wolverines -14 (-110) and Rutgers Scarlet Knights +14 (-110).

The projected six-point margin favors Rutgers relative to the line, but the betting case remains fragile. Michigan’s red-zone struggles argue against laying 14, while Rutgers’ 42-14 loss illustrates the risk of backing the underdog. Its two 100-yard rushers were not enough to keep that game close. Rutgers +14 is the more appealing side of the projection, but the uncertainty around both offenses leaves it short of an official wager.

Michigan Wolverines vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Under 46.5 (-107) and Over 46.5 (-113).

The projected 40 points place the forecast below 46.5. Michigan’s defensive rankings and recent failure to finish drives favor a lower-scoring game. However, Rutgers’ 42 points conceded at Northwestern leave room for a Michigan offensive rebound, while Duff and Raymond supply threats in the other direction. The Under fits the forecast better than the Over, but a score estimate alone is insufficient reason to pay -107. The total remains a Pass.

Michigan Wolverines vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights projected score

Game forecast: Michigan 23, Rutgers 17. Michigan’s season defensive profile, backed by its performance against Indiana, gives it the strongest claim to win. The projection assumes improved offensive finishing after six points on four red-zone trips, without assuming the Wolverines suddenly become a dominant scoring team.

The strongest counterargument is that those offensive problems persist while Raymond or Duff creates enough scoring opportunities for Rutgers. That possibility keeps forecast confidence low. Michigan is the winner selection, but neither side of the 14-point spread earns a wager. The same applies to Over or Under 46.5 despite a projected total of 40. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
