Washington St. Cougars vs Utah State Aggies Predictions October 9, 2026

Game time: October 9, 2026 at 9:00 PM ET

Venue: Maverik Stadium — Logan, UT

Article updated Oct 6, 8:10 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Utah State will beat Washington State 23-20 in a matchup of 1-4 teams. The Aggies get the slight edge from their home record under Bronco Mendenhall and the rushing and receiving production they showed at Boise State. Their defensive concerns keep that edge narrow, however. Neither Utah State -5.5 (-110) nor the 43.5-point total offers a compelling wager.

Washington St. Cougars vs Utah State Aggies prediction and best bet

Utah State is the pick to win, but the official betting recommendation is Pass. The Aggies have enough recent offensive production to earn a slight preference at home. Asking them to win by at least six points is a tougher call after a game in which their defense surrendered several long completions.

Both teams enter 1-4 overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 play. Utah State's difficult schedule helps explain its record, while Washington State's six-point performance against Fresno State raises an immediate offensive concern. Those factors favor the Aggies modestly; they do not make this a comfortable favorite to back.

Washington St. Cougars outlook

Washington State lost 26-6 to Fresno State at Gesa Field on October 3. Caden Pinnick completed 21 of 34 passes for 152 yards. That combination of completions and modest yardage points to the central challenge for Friday: turning passing possessions into more substantial gains and scoring opportunities.

Jack Stevens supplied the Cougars' scoring with two field goals, including a 50-yarder. His performance was a positive, but Washington State needs more than another game built entirely around field goals to make the upset forecast attractive.

Defensively, Isaiah Hung led the Cougars with seven tackles, while Khamari Terrell recorded six tackles and recovered a fumble. Those individual contributions offer some encouragement after a difficult result, although they are not enough to predict how consistently Washington State will contain Utah State's offense.

Utah State Aggies outlook

Utah State lost 37-18 at No. 22 Boise State on October 3, but its offense produced notable individual performances. Javen Jacobs recorded his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, including runs of 64 and 46 yards. Eli Wood caught seven passes for a career-high 102 yards and his third touchdown of 2026.

Grady Brosterhous started at quarterback and rotated with McCae Hillstead. That describes the Boise State game, rather than a confirmed starting arrangement for Friday. The productive outings from Jacobs and Wood are the clearest reasons to expect the Aggies to generate enough offense to win.

The defense carries greater concern. Boise State completed three passes of at least 30 yards and scored touchdowns on three of four red-zone trips. Defensive back Chapman Lewis also left after appearing to injure his left shoulder. His Friday availability remains uncertain.

Key matchup factors

Location and opposition quality help separate otherwise identical records. Utah State is 1-1 at Maverik Stadium this season and 6-2 at home under Mendenhall. Its first five opponents included road games against ranked Washington, Utah and Boise State. According to the Aggies' October 5 preview, their four losses came against opponents with a combined 15-4 record.

The previous meeting offers a counterweight: Washington State won the December 22, 2025 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl 34-21. That result deserves acknowledgment, but it carries less weight in this forecast than the teams' current performances. Neither that bowl win nor Utah State's home record settles Friday's matchup.

As of October 6 at 11:59:55 UTC, SportsJaw's blended moneyline consensus favored Utah State -200 at 68%, with 408 of 600 combined consensus selections on the Aggies. Those counts incorporate a modeled sportsbook sample and SportsJaw participation; they are not observed sportsbook ticket totals. The sportsbook percentage increased three points from October 5. This is moneyline sentiment, not a win probability or evidence of spread value.

Washington St. Cougars vs Utah State Aggies spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Utah State -5.5 (-110) and Washington State +5.5 (-110). Utah State's offensive flashes and home record favor a win, but its recent defensive breakdowns make separation less convincing.

The projected three-point margin falls on Washington State's side of the spread. Even so, the Cougars' latest offensive performance makes taking the points a fragile proposition. A close-game forecast alone is insufficient reason to turn Washington State +5.5 (-110) into an official wager.

Washington St. Cougars vs Utah State Aggies total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 43.5 (-110) and Under 43.5 (-110). The projected 43 points sit almost directly on the line, leaving no meaningful cushion for an Under recommendation.

Washington State's recent scoring struggles pull the forecast lower. Utah State's long offensive gains and vulnerability to long passes push the other way. These recent games offer competing signals, with too much uncertainty about which will carry into Friday to justify either direction.

Washington St. Cougars vs Utah State Aggies projected score

Game forecast: Utah State 23, Washington State 20. The Aggies' home setting and recent production from Jacobs and Wood supply the narrow edge. The strongest counterargument is their defense, which could give Washington State opportunities to improve sharply on last week's output.

Confidence is low because the forecast depends on limited recent evidence and neither team has separated itself convincingly. Utah State is the projected winner; both the spread and total are passes. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
