Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics Predictions Today: Hunter Brown vs Jacob Lopez

Game time: September 25, 2026 at 9:40 PM ET

Venue: Sutter Health Park — Sacramento, California

Article updated Sep 25, 9:28 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

The Houston Astros will beat the Oakland Athletics, with a projected score of Houston 5, Oakland 3. Hunter Brown's recent strikeouts and run prevention provide the strongest advantage against a struggling Jacob Lopez. However, Lopez's success against Houston makes Astros -1.5 (-105) less appealing than the pitching gap suggests. Neither that spread nor the 8.5 total offers a strong enough betting edge.

Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics prediction and best bet

Houston is the winner pick because Brown brings the stronger season ERA and substantially better recent results. His last five starts produced 44 strikeouts against eight walks, while Lopez surrendered seven home runs in his corresponding five-start window. Houston also has the lower bullpen ERA, giving the Astros another statistical advantage beyond the starting matchup.

The best betting decision is Pass. Lopez held Houston to one earned run in their August meeting, and his career results against the current Astros roster offer a meaningful warning against laying runs. A Houston victory is easier to endorse than Houston -1.5 (-105). The projected eight runs lean below the total, but the Under also carries considerable risk.

Houston Astros outlook

Brown's season provides the foundation for the Houston pick. Across 102 innings, he has allowed 79 hits, 40 runs, 37 earned runs and 11 home runs, with 51 walks and 120 strikeouts. His 3.26 ERA and 1.27 WHIP are encouraging, although the walks leave Oakland a route to scoring without stringing together several hits.

His recent control has been sharper. Over five starts spanning 26 2/3 innings, Brown allowed 23 hits, nine runs, eight earned runs and one homer, with eight walks and 44 strikeouts. On September 20 against Atlanta, he threw five scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and 10 strikeouts. On September 15 against Kansas City, he allowed one earned run and two hits in five innings, walking three and striking out 10.

Houston averages 4.45 runs per game, but Lopez presents a specific obstacle. Against him, the current Astros roster has a .148 batting average and .244 wOBA over 64 career plate appearances. Those are individual matchup results, not a team-wide split against left-handers.

Houston's bullpen has a 4.09 ERA. Covers lists Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader with one day of rest apiece, with respective workloads of 2 1/3 and 1 1/3 innings across their last three appearances.

Oakland Athletics outlook

Lopez has 108 strikeouts alongside his 5.68 season ERA, but his recent results put Oakland at a disadvantage. Across his last five starts, he allowed 32 hits, 23 runs, 22 earned runs and seven homers in 23 1/3 innings. He walked nine and struck out 18, finishing that stretch with an 8.49 ERA.

The two latest outings account for much of that damage. At Cleveland on September 19, Lopez surrendered 10 earned runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings, including two homers, with no walks and one strikeout. Against Seattle on September 13, he allowed five earned runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings, with one homer, three walks and three strikeouts.

His August 22 start against Houston was much better: six innings, three hits, one earned run, no homers, one walk and nine strikeouts. That performance keeps a competitive Oakland game firmly within the forecast's range.

Oakland averages 4.35 runs per game. Its current roster has hit .244 against Brown over 87 career plate appearances, with a 29.9% strikeout rate. Oakland's 5.27 bullpen ERA adds concern if Lopez exits early, although that season figure alone says little about which relievers will be effective Friday.

Key matchup factors

The largest difference is pitching, not season scoring. Houston's 4.45 runs per game sit only slightly above Oakland's 4.35. That modest offensive separation makes the starter matchup central to the forecast, while also counseling restraint about a comfortable Astros win.

Length matters too. Brown completed five innings in each of his two latest starts; Lopez failed to finish four in either of his. Another short Lopez outing would place more responsibility on Oakland's bullpen.

At 13:14 UTC on September 25, the blended consensus favored Under 9 (-110) at 67%. Its combined modeled sample contained 402 Under selections out of 600. Those are modeled equivalents, not observed sportsbook tickets, and the consensus line differs from SportsJaw's 8.5.

Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics spread prediction

Pass on Houston -1.5 (-105) and Oakland +1.5 (-115). Brown's form makes Houston the preferred winner, but the Astros must win by at least two runs to cover. Their narrow advantage in season scoring and Lopez's strong Houston matchup history temper enthusiasm for that margin.

The projected two-run win lands on the Houston side of the spread, but it leaves little cushion for a lower-scoring game. Oakland's extra run and a half is tempting if Lopez rebounds; his recent home-run problems make that wager uncomfortable too.

Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics total prediction

Pass on Over 8.5 (-110) and Under 8.5 (-110). Brown's strikeouts and Lopez's previous success against Houston support a quieter game, but Lopez's recent seven-homer stretch creates substantial scoring risk. Oakland's bullpen ERA adds to that concern.

The Under 9 consensus cannot be treated as an endorsement of Under 8.5 at the same price. Nine runs would push an Under 9 wager and lose an Under 8.5 wager. The eight-run forecast points downward, yet that half-run difference and Lopez's uneven results keep the total a Pass.

Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics projected score

Game forecast: Houston Astros 5, Oakland Athletics 3. Confidence is medium. Brown's season performance, recent strikeout totals and improved walk numbers give Houston a supported, ordinary edge. He also allowed just one run in 5 2/3 innings against Oakland on August 22, although seven hits and three walks show that outing was not effortless.

The strongest counterargument is Lopez's ability to contain these hitters, demonstrated both in August and in his limited career sample against the current roster. That makes the margin less dependable than the winner pick. Houston remains the forecast winner, while both the run line and total remain Pass recommendations. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
