UMass Minutemen vs Buffalo Bulls Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 1:00 PM ET

Venue: Broadview Stadium — Buffalo, NY

Article updated Oct 13, 12:07 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Buffalo will beat UMass, 23-20, with Messiah Burch’s rushing form and the Bulls’ recent defensive performance providing the strongest matchup advantage. The Minutemen’s productive passing finish against Miami (OH) keeps this forecast close, even with questions surrounding their quarterbacks. Neither Buffalo -6.5 (-105) nor the total of 41.5 (-110) offers a strong enough edge for an actionable wager. The official recommendation is Pass.

UMass Minutemen vs Buffalo Bulls prediction and best bet

Buffalo is the pick in this Flagship Cup matchup, but winning and covering nearly a touchdown are different assignments. Burch gives the Bulls a credible offensive foundation, and their performance against Toledo supplies a concrete reason to favor their defense.

The best betting decision is Pass. UMass showed enough through the air against Miami (OH) to make a comfortable Buffalo victory uncertain. A close Bulls win fits the recent evidence, while the unresolved quarterback picture makes both the margin and scoring outlook fragile.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Game: UMass Minutemen at Buffalo Bulls, Saturday, October 17, 2026, in college football’s 2026 season.

Venue: Broadview Stadium. Buffalo’s October 12 university advisory confirms the matchup and announces a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.

Records: Buffalo is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in MAC play. UMass is 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

SportsJaw spread: UMass +6.5 (-111); Buffalo -6.5 (-105).

SportsJaw moneyline: UMass +195; Buffalo -235.

SportsJaw total: Over 41.5 (-110); Under 41.5 (-110).

UMass Minutemen outlook

UMass lost 20-19 to Miami (OH) on October 10, but its late response matters to this forecast. Logan Inagawa completed all six attempts for 83 yards and directed a 91-yard touchdown drive in the final 2:22. The ensuing two-point attempt failed, leaving the Minutemen one point short.

Freshman Aedan McCarthy made his first career start because William “Pop” Watson III was injured. McCarthy passed for 171 yards before leaving with an injury in the fourth quarter. Those events create uncertainty for Saturday; they do not establish which quarterback will start or who will be available.

T.Y. Harding supplied a career-high nine catches for 91 yards, and Jabari Lewis added five receptions for 89 yards. The ground game contributed much less: UMass rushed for 65 yards, with Curtis Kimmons IV accounting for 35 and a 23-yard touchdown. The passing production offers a route to staying competitive if the rushing attack struggles again.

Buffalo Bulls outlook

Buffalo won 23-8 at Toledo on October 10. The Bulls allowed 308 total yards against an offense that entered averaging nearly 500, including just 105 rushing yards. That is a useful recent defensive benchmark, though one result should not become an expectation that every opponent will finish in single digits.

Burch rushed for 137 yards, recording his third consecutive 100-yard game. His 87-yard touchdown demonstrated his ability to change a game with one run. It also accounted for most of his yardage that afternoon, so the final total alone should not be mistaken for proof of steady gains on every possession.

Jason Wright passed for 170 yards and scored a rushing touchdown. Dwayne Early Jr. caught four passes for 77 yards, including a 37-yard reception. Buffalo therefore enters with recent contributions beyond its lead runner, an encouraging detail if UMass makes Burch its defensive priority.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Buffalo can force UMass to rely heavily on passing. The Bulls’ recent run defense and the Minutemen’s modest rushing output point toward that possibility. UMass’s receiving production is the counterweight: a difficult day on the ground need not eliminate its scoring chances.

SportsJaw’s October 13 consensus update has Over 41.5 (-110) at 60%. Its combined counts represent 360 Over selections and 240 Under selections in a modeled equivalent sample of 600. The blend weights sportsbook sentiment at 80% and SportsJaw participation at 20%; these are not observed sportsbook ticket counts or 600 member picks. That preference is useful context, not a 60% probability of the Over cashing.

UMass Minutemen vs Buffalo Bulls spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Buffalo -6.5 (-105) and UMass +6.5 (-111). Buffalo’s rushing form and recent defensive showing favor an outright victory, but the projected three-point margin falls short of a Bulls cover.

That projection gives UMass a plausible case with the points, rather than an automatic wager. Its quarterback availability remains unsettled, and Inagawa’s excellent finish consisted of only six attempts. The difference between a competitive passing performance and a disrupted offense is too consequential to make either spread side the official selection.

UMass Minutemen vs Buffalo Bulls total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 41.5 (-110) and Under 41.5 (-110). The forecast totals 43 points, a narrow lean above the line that carries little room for error.

Buffalo’s defensive result favors caution about scoring, while Burch’s long touchdown and UMass’s late passing drive illustrate routes to quick points. Neither recent recap supplies a dependable pace expectation. Quarterback uncertainty adds another variable, and the consensus preference for the Over is not enough to turn this small projected difference into a bet.

UMass Minutemen vs Buffalo Bulls projected score

Game forecast: Buffalo Bulls 23, UMass Minutemen 20. Buffalo gets the nod because Burch’s three-game rushing streak and the defensive performance at Toledo offer the clearest combination of recent strengths.

The strongest counterargument is UMass’s ability to produce through its receivers and mount a late scoring drive despite quarterback changes. Confidence is low because that personnel uncertainty could substantially change the game. Both the spread and total are a Pass, and the single official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass.
