Penn St. Nittany Lions vs Michigan Wolverines Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 3:30 PM ET

Venue: Michigan Stadium — Ann Arbor, MI

Article updated Oct 12, 8:58 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Michigan will beat Penn State 24-20 in the Oct. 17 matchup, with its stronger SP+ rating providing the clearest reason to favor the Wolverines. Penn State’s explosive passing gives the Nittany Lions a credible chance to challenge that forecast. Neither Michigan -6 (-108), Penn State +6 (-112), nor the total of 42.5 offers a convincing betting edge. The official recommendation is Pass.

Penn St. Nittany Lions vs Michigan Wolverines prediction and best bet

Michigan is the pick to win, with low confidence. The Wolverines’ 13.1 SP+ rating exceeds Penn State’s 9.6, and Michigan hosts this matchup. Those advantages support the winner selection, but the case for a particular winning margin is much less convincing.

The official betting recommendation is Pass. Penn State has enough downfield production to threaten the six-point spread, yet its recent rushing struggles and three consecutive losses weaken the argument for backing the underdog. Michigan is the preferred winner without either spread price offering a compelling wager.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Game: Penn St. Nittany Lions at Michigan Wolverines, Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, in college football.

Venue: Michigan Stadium.

Records and recent form: Penn State is 3-3 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play following its Oct. 10 loss to USC. Michigan returns from a bye.

SportsJaw moneyline: Penn State +180; Michigan -220.

SportsJaw spread: Penn State +6 (-112); Michigan -6 (-108).

SportsJaw total: Over 42.5 (-110); Under 42.5 (-110).

Penn St. Nittany Lions outlook

Penn State’s 31-23 loss to USC showed both its passing potential and its offensive imbalance. Rocco Becht completed 21 of 32 attempts for 289 yards and one touchdown. Chase Sowell contributed four catches for 95 yards, with gains of 47 and 37 yards. The Nittany Lions generated five pass plays of at least 20 yards.

The running game offered much less. Penn State finished with 68 rushing yards, and Carson Hansen led the team with 28 yards on 10 carries. Another performance with that imbalance would put considerable pressure on Becht to keep drives moving through the air.

Possession security also mattered against USC. Brett Eskildsen lost a fumble after a 25-yard reception in USC territory with 3:59 remaining, and USC retained possession through the finish. On defense, Tony Rojas contributed 10 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. His individual production was encouraging, although Penn State still left with its third straight defeat.

Michigan Wolverines outlook

Michigan’s strongest supporting evidence is its overall rating. Maize n Brew’s Oct. 11 report placed the Wolverines No. 23 in the post-Week 6 SP+ rankings, three places higher than before their bye. Their rating increased by 0.7 points to 13.1.

That rise occurred while Michigan was idle, so it should not be mistaken for a fresh performance breakthrough. The ranking favors Michigan over No. 38 Penn State, but it offers a broader assessment rather than a specific explanation of how the Wolverines will score or defend this opponent. The bye adds preparation time; its effect on Saturday’s execution remains a forecast question.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Penn State can turn long gains into sustained scoring. Its passing production creates a plausible upset route, while the limited rushing output against USC suggests a less balanced route to victory. Michigan’s forecast depends partly on making Penn State work through longer possessions rather than conceding quick scoring opportunities.

The rating gap is 3.5 points, but subtracting the two SP+ ratings is not a complete game projection. Treating that difference as an automatic reason to take Penn State +6 would give a single comparison too much weight.

At the Oct. 12, 12:53 UTC update, SportsJaw’s combined moneyline consensus favored Michigan -220 at 79 percent, up two percentage points from Oct. 11. The accompanying modeled equivalent sample allocated 474 of 600 selections to Michigan. Those are modeled counts, not observed sportsbook tickets, and the consensus percentage is not Michigan’s estimated win probability.

Penn St. Nittany Lions vs Michigan Wolverines spread prediction

Pass on Penn State +6 (-112) and Michigan -6 (-108). The projected four-point Michigan victory leans toward Penn State covering, but the margin is too uncertain to turn that lean into an official wager.

Penn State’s passing offers a reason to consider the points. Its rushing difficulties and costly late turnover offer reasons for restraint. Michigan’s rating advantage supports winning more clearly than it supports covering six, leaving neither side with demonstrated value at the supplied price.

Penn St. Nittany Lions vs Michigan Wolverines total prediction

Pass on Over 42.5 (-110) and Under 42.5 (-110). The projected 44 points sit slightly above the total, but that narrow difference is not enough to justify an Over bet.

Penn State’s long completions create scoring potential, while its limited rushing production raises questions about consistency. Michigan’s overall SP+ rating does not supply a scoring breakdown for this matchup. There is no strong reason to favor either total direction at these prices.

Penn St. Nittany Lions vs Michigan Wolverines projected score

Game forecast: Michigan 24, Penn State 20. The Wolverines’ stronger rating and home setting drive the selection. Penn State’s downfield passing is the strongest counterargument and keeps the projected margin close.

Confidence is low because the edge rests heavily on the rating comparison, with limited recent Michigan performance detail. The forecast favors Michigan to win and Penn State to finish inside six points, but neither the spread nor the total earns a wager. The single official SportsJaw betting recommendation is Pass.
