Western Michigan Broncos vs Central Michigan Chippewas Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 1:30 PM ET

Venue: Kelly/Shorts Stadium — Mount Pleasant, MI

Article updated Oct 12, 8:39 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Western Michigan is the pick to beat Central Michigan 24-20, with its recent pass rush offering the strongest matchup advantage against a protection unit that allowed four sacks at Ohio. The Broncos look more convincing coming off their latest performance, but the supplied prices offer no clear wager: pass on Western Michigan -7 (-110) and the total of 42.5 (-110).

Western Michigan Broncos vs Central Michigan Chippewas prediction and best bet

Western Michigan should win this Victory Cannon matchup, but Central Michigan has a credible route to keeping it close. The Broncos' balanced production against Kent State makes them the preferred winner. Their defensive pressure is particularly relevant against a Chippewas offense coming off a difficult afternoon protecting its quarterback.

The official betting lean is Pass. Favoring Western Michigan outright is easier than asking it to win by more than seven on the road. Central Michigan's contrasting performances against Akron and Ohio make the margin a fragile call, and the projected four-point difference is not enough by itself to justify taking the underdog.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Game time: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. ET. This is a 2026 college football matchup.

Venue: Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

Broadcast: ESPN+.

Records: Western Michigan is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in MAC play. Central Michigan is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

SportsJaw odds: Western Michigan moneyline -275; Central Michigan moneyline +225. Spread: Western Michigan -7 (-110), Central Michigan +7 (-110). Total: Over 42.5 (-110), Under 42.5 (-110).

Western Michigan Broncos outlook

Western Michigan beat Kent State 38-7 on Oct. 10, producing a season-high 466 yards. Broc Lowry completed 18 of 26 passes for a career-high 257 yards and three touchdowns. He also contributed 52 rushing yards and a touchdown, giving Central Michigan a quarterback to account for beyond the passing game.

Jalen Buckley rushed for 105 yards on 16 carries. The Broncos finished with 204 rushing yards and 262 passing yards, showing they could generate offense through both routes in that game. That flexibility is the strongest offensive reason to favor them here.

Defensively, Western Michigan allowed 298 total yards and 75 rushing yards while collecting five sacks. Those results suggest a promising matchup, although a dominant afternoon against Kent State should not be treated as a guarantee of the same control against Central Michigan.

Central Michigan Chippewas outlook

Central Michigan lost 31-14 at Ohio on Oct. 10 after falling behind 31-0 at halftime. Ohio gained 403 total yards. The early deficit is the clearest concern from that result: the Chippewas need a more competitive opening to keep their offensive options intact.

Angel Flores completed 14 of 20 passes for 112 yards and was sacked four times. His completion rate alone offers an incomplete picture of an offense that struggled to generate passing yardage. Improving protection is a priority against Western Michigan's recent pressure production.

The ground game supplies the counterargument. Central Michigan rushed for 121 yards at Ohio after gaining 332 in a 41-17 victory over Akron on Oct. 3. Jayden Clerveaux and Nick Woodford scored rushing touchdowns against Ohio, with Woodford's coming from 20 yards. The Akron performance shows why dismissing this offense after one loss would be premature.

Key matchup factors

Protection is the pivotal matchup. If Western Michigan can force Flores into hurried decisions or sacks, Central Michigan may struggle to sustain drives. If the Chippewas establish their running game instead, they can make passing situations more manageable and reduce the Broncos' chances to attack obvious dropbacks.

The series offers a reason to temper the road-favorite forecast. This is the 97th Victory Cannon meeting, and Western Michigan leads 54-40-2. Central Michigan, however, is 17-7-1 at home against the Broncos since joining the MAC in 1975 and won the Nov. 19, 2024, Mount Pleasant meeting 16-14. That history adds context, but it carries less weight than the current teams' performances.

Western Michigan Broncos vs Central Michigan Chippewas spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Western Michigan -7 (-110) and Central Michigan +7 (-110). The Broncos' latest performance supports picking them to win, but extending that judgment to a cover requires more conviction about Central Michigan's offensive struggles carrying over.

The 24-20 projection points toward the Chippewas covering. Still, their sharp change in rushing output over the last two games makes that lean too uncertain for an official wager. A Western Michigan win by exactly seven would push either supplied spread.

Western Michigan Broncos vs Central Michigan Chippewas total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 42.5 (-110) and Under 42.5 (-110). The projected 44 points sit slightly above the line, but that small difference is not a persuasive betting edge.

Western Michigan's offensive balance gives the Over a plausible route. Its recent defensive performance points the other way, particularly if Central Michigan struggles to protect Flores. The Chippewas' rushing success against Akron adds another variable: effective running could sustain scoring drives, so a ground-focused approach should not automatically be read as an Under signal.

Western Michigan Broncos vs Central Michigan Chippewas projected score

Game forecast: Western Michigan Broncos 24, Central Michigan Chippewas 20. The Broncos get the nod because their latest offensive balance and defensive pressure fit the matchup well. Central Michigan's demonstrated rushing upside is the strongest counterargument and keeps the projected margin modest.

Confidence is low because the edge rests heavily on recent games against different opponents. Western Michigan is the projected winner; both the spread and total are passes. The single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
