Alabama Crimson Tide vs Tennessee Volunteers Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 3:30 PM ET

Venue: Neyland Stadium — Knoxville, TN

Article updated Oct 13, 12:10 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Alabama is projected to beat Tennessee, 27-20, with its defense offering the strongest matchup advantage against an offense facing a quarterback decision and ball-security concerns. Josh Heupel’s assessment of the Crimson Tide supports that forecast, but Alabama’s receiver injury uncertainty keeps confidence low. Neither Alabama -8.5 (-110) nor the total of 51.5 (-110) offers a compelling wager; the official recommendation is Pass.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Tennessee Volunteers prediction and best bet

The pick is Alabama, with a competitive game more likely than a comfortable cover. Heupel’s October 12 assessment highlighted Alabama’s ability to restrict rushing yards and explosive plays while producing turnovers. Those qualities could test Tennessee’s execution, especially with its starting quarterback still undecided in that report.

The best bet is Pass. Alabama’s recent loss to Georgia and the potential absence of its leading receiver temper the case for laying 8.5 points. Tennessee has enough recent production to challenge the favorite, but a projected close finish alone is not enough to make the Volunteers an official wager.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Game: Alabama Crimson Tide at Tennessee Volunteers, Saturday, October 17, 2026, in the 2026 college football season.

Venue: Neyland Stadium. Broadcast: ABC.

Records and recent form: Tennessee is 5-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play. It has won two consecutive conference games after losing its SEC opener to Texas. Alabama lost to Georgia by three points on October 10.

Quarterback status: Tennessee planned to choose its starter during the practice week, according to its October 12 preview.

SportsJaw odds: Alabama -8.5 (-110), Tennessee +8.5 (-110). Over 51.5 (-110), Under 51.5 (-110). Moneyline: Alabama -339, Tennessee +267.

Alabama Crimson Tide outlook

Heupel described Alabama’s running game as more efficient and its quarterback as an effective passer capable of extending plays with his feet. That assessment suggests an offense with more than one route to sustaining possessions. Quarterback mobility could be especially useful if Tennessee takes away the initial passing option.

Receiver availability is the major concern. WBRC reported October 12 that Kalen DeBoer considered Ryan Coleman-Williams unlikely to play against Tennessee. The receiver was dealing with knee and head issues from the Georgia game; his absence was not confirmed.

Through six games, Coleman-Williams shared Alabama’s team lead with 23 receptions and led the team with 415 receiving yards. He caught three passes for 39 yards before leaving against Georgia. If he misses this matchup, Alabama would have to replace meaningful production, making a substantial winning margin harder to trust.

Tennessee Volunteers outlook

DeSean Bishop gives Tennessee a concrete reason for optimism. He carried 19 times for 138 yards against Arkansas and scored the decisive eight-yard touchdown with 1:57 remaining in a 24-17 victory. That was his second consecutive 100-yard rushing performance and his third of the season.

George MacIntyre’s first career start brought both useful production and costly mistakes. He completed 18 of 29 passes for 247 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. DaSaahn Brame supplied a big receiving contribution with three catches for 87 yards and a touchdown, including a 68-yard catch-and-run.

Tennessee also received a possession-changing defensive play from Xavier Gilliam, who recorded a strip sack and recovered the fumble. Those contributions offer several paths to another competitive performance. Still, Heupel identified ball security, pre-snap penalties and improvement in the running game as priorities before Alabama’s visit.

Key matchup factors

The central question is whether Tennessee can keep its running game productive enough to ease the burden on its quarterback. If Alabama forces more obvious passing situations, the Volunteers’ ball security becomes especially important. That is the main reason to favor Alabama, although the defensive assessment comes from Heupel rather than a supplied statistical comparison.

SportsJaw’s October 13 consensus update favors Alabama -8.5 (-110) at 81% and Over 51.5 (-110) at 80% in the blended markets. The modeled equivalent samples are 486 Alabama selections against 114 Tennessee selections, and 480 Over against 120 Under. These are modeled counts, not observed sportsbook tickets or separate SportsJaw member-pick totals. They describe selection preferences, not the probability of either bet winning.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Tennessee Volunteers spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Pass on Alabama -8.5 (-110) and Tennessee +8.5 (-110).

The projected seven-point Alabama victory falls inside Tennessee’s spread. That gives the Volunteers a plausible covering scenario, particularly if Bishop maintains his recent form and Alabama plays without Coleman-Williams. It is only a narrow cushion, however, and Tennessee’s quarterback uncertainty leaves room for a wider result.

Alabama’s matchup advantages justify the winner pick, but covering requires a victory by at least nine points. With meaningful questions on both offenses, neither side warrants an official spread bet.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Tennessee Volunteers total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 51.5 (-110) and Under 51.5 (-110).

The forecast adds up to 47 points, giving the projection an Under direction. Alabama’s defensive profile, as described by Heupel, and its receiver uncertainty both fit a more restrained scoring outlook. Tennessee’s latest game also finished with 41 points, though one result is a limited guide.

The counterargument is Tennessee’s demonstrated ability to produce a long receiving gain and Alabama’s quarterback extending possessions. Turnovers could also create short fields. The consensus preference for the Over is clear, but neither that preference nor the projected score makes this total a strong wager.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Tennessee Volunteers projected score

Game forecast: Alabama 27, Tennessee 20. Alabama gets the edge because its reported defensive strengths align with Tennessee’s stated areas for improvement. Bishop’s recent rushing performances and Coleman-Williams’ uncertain availability are the strongest reasons Tennessee could overturn that forecast.

Confidence is low. The matchup favors Alabama slightly, with enough personnel uncertainty to make the margin fragile. The spread and total remain separate Pass recommendations, and the single official SportsJaw betting lean is Pass.
