Ohio Bobcats vs Sacramento St. Hornets Predictions October 17, 2026

Game time: October 17, 2026 at 10:00 PM ET

Venue: Hornet Stadium — Sacramento, CA

Article updated Oct 16, 10:58 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

Ohio will beat Sacramento State, with a projected score of Ohio 31, Sacramento State 13. The Bobcats’ productive rushing attack and the Hornets’ turnover problems create the strongest matchup advantage for this October 17 game. Ohio -15.5 (-110) is the best bet at the supplied price, with medium confidence in the forecast. The total of 48.5 is a Pass.

Ohio Bobcats vs Sacramento St. Hornets prediction and best bet

Ohio -15.5 (-110) is the strongest wager because Sacramento State’s conference scoring struggles leave it vulnerable to a sizable deficit. Through three MAC games, the Hornets have been outscored by averages of 30.3 to 11.0. Ohio brings a rushing attack averaging 197.3 yards per game, giving the favorite a credible way to build that separation.

The projected 18-point margin clears the spread, but only narrowly. This is a medium-confidence forecast: Ohio has the stronger combination of offensive production and recent results, while Sacramento State could threaten the cover simply by cutting down on costly mistakes. The wager depends on the Bobcats sustaining drives, not on assuming another turnover-heavy afternoon for the Hornets.

Ohio Bobcats outlook

Ohio beat Central Michigan 31-14 on October 10 with contributions from both its passing and running games. Nick Poulos passed for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Duncan Brune rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown, while Victor Rosa added 70 rushing yards. That performance supports a forecast in which Ohio can score without relying entirely on one player.

Entering the Sacramento State matchup, Rosa had 289 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and Brune had 275 yards and one touchdown. Their production gives Ohio two useful options on the ground. The tactical opportunity is to stay ahead of long-yardage situations and make Sacramento State defend both the run and the pass.

Riley Neer entered this game leading Ohio with 27 catches, 397 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Those totals include his 59 yards and touchdown against Central Michigan, when Preston Bowman and Dom Dorwart also caught touchdown passes. Neer gives Poulos a productive receiving option if the Hornets focus on the backfield.

Michael Molnar is the clearest individual defensive concern for Sacramento State. His five tackles, two sacks and forced fumble against Central Michigan contributed to season totals of 50 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Sacramento St. Hornets outlook

Sacramento State lost 38-10 at Bowling Green on October 10. The Hornets took a 3-0 lead before allowing 38 unanswered points. Boogsie Silvera made the team’s first interception of the season, and Grant Meadors finished the ensuing possession with a 33-yard field goal, but that early opportunity did not translate into a competitive final margin.

Jackson Sharman completed 13 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Matthew Coleman accounted for six catches, 85 yards and the touchdown. Their connection offers Sacramento State a route to moving the ball, although the Hornets need more scoring than they produced in that game to pressure Ohio.

Ball security remains a major concern. Sacramento State had 12 giveaways against three takeaways through six games, leaving it with a minus-nine turnover margin. Opponents had converted those giveaways into 49 points. Avoiding those damaging possessions would help both the offense and a defense trying to limit Ohio’s scoring chances.

There is a defensive bright spot: Sacramento State stopped all five opponent fourth-down attempts entering this matchup. That is useful resistance, although five attempts are a small sample. The Hornets were also 1-3 at home, so the return to Hornet Stadium alone is not a strong reason to expect a reversal.

Key matchup factors

Possession quality matters more here than simply counting possessions. If Ohio can produce manageable third downs through its running game, Sacramento State may have fewer opportunities to use its fourth-down defense. Conversely, forcing the Bobcats into obvious passing situations would put more responsibility on Poulos and reduce the favorite’s room for error.

This is the programs’ first football meeting, with Sacramento State in its inaugural FBS and MAC season. There is no head-to-head result to anchor the forecast. The strongest comparison comes from their current production and recent conference performances.

SportsJaw member picks favored Ohio -15.5 (-110) with 67% support in the October 14 update. The community total leader was Over 47.5 (-110), with 100% support. That total sentiment applies to 47.5, a different threshold from the current 48.5; neither percentage is a win probability.

Ohio Bobcats vs Sacramento St. Hornets spread prediction

Spread recommendation: Ohio Bobcats -15.5 (-110). The Bobcats’ rushing production, Molnar’s disruption and Sacramento State’s limited conference scoring combine into a reasonable case for a cover. Ohio must win by at least 16 points, and the 31-13 forecast allows only a modest cushion.

Sacramento State’s best response is a clean offensive game that makes Ohio earn long scoring drives. A late Hornets touchdown could also change the spread result without changing the winner. Those risks keep this recommendation measured rather than making it a high-confidence play.

Ohio Bobcats vs Sacramento St. Hornets total prediction

Total recommendation: Pass on Over 48.5 (-110) and Under 48.5 (-110). The projected 44 points sit below the line, with Sacramento State’s recent scoring pointing toward the Under. A score forecast, however, is not enough by itself to make that the best wager.

Turnovers introduce uncertainty in both directions: they can end Hornets drives but also hand Ohio easier scoring opportunities. The community preference for Over 47.5 adds a different opinion at a lower number. The spread offers the clearer matchup case, so the total stays a Pass.

Ohio Bobcats vs Sacramento St. Hornets projected score

Game forecast: Ohio Bobcats 31, Sacramento St. Hornets 13. Ohio’s ground game supplies the foundation, with its recent passing production offering another route to points. The strongest counterargument is Sacramento State protecting possession and turning defensive stops into a closer game. Confidence: medium. The single official SportsJaw wager is spread, Ohio Bobcats -15.5 (-110).
