New York Jets vs Chicago Bears Predictions October 4, 2026

Game time: October 4, 2026 at 1:00 PM ET

Venue: Soldier Field — Chicago, IL

Article updated Oct 3, 3:03 AM EDT

By SportsJaw Editorial Team

The Chicago Bears will beat the New York Jets, Bears 23, Jets 17, with their NFL-leading rushing production providing the strongest matchup reason. Chicago's quarterback uncertainty and defensive absences keep confidence low despite New York's offensive injuries. Neither Bears -3.5 (-110) nor Under 43 (-110) offers a sufficiently convincing edge at the supplied price. The official betting recommendation is Pass.

New York Jets vs Chicago Bears prediction and best bet

Chicago gets the pick because its running game offers the clearest demonstrated strength in this matchup. The Bears lead the NFL with 184.3 rushing yards per game and 5.27 rushing yards per play. With D'Andre Swift carrying no game-status designation after Friday's practice, that production is the foundation for a Bears 23, Jets 17 forecast.

The best betting decision is Pass. Caleb Williams is out, Chicago has not announced its replacement starter, and left tackle Braxton Jones is also unavailable. New York has substantial offensive losses, but Geno Smith's encouraging start and Chicago's defensive injuries complicate both markets. A Chicago victory is the forecast; a dependable betting advantage is a higher bar.

Odds, game time and how to watch

Game: New York Jets at Chicago Bears, 2026 NFL season, Sunday, October 4. Kickoff: 1 p.m. ET. Broadcast: FOX.

Venue: Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois. Records: Jets 1-2; Bears 2-1 following their September 28 victory over Philadelphia.

Quarterbacks: Geno Smith for New York; Chicago had not named Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum as Williams' replacement.

SportsJaw spread: Jets +3.5 (-108), Bears -3.5 (-110). Moneyline: Jets +165, Bears -190. Total: Over 43 (-110), Under 43 (-110).

New York Jets outlook

Smith supplies New York's strongest reason for optimism. The Jets' official preview describes him as starting the season well, giving the visitors a potential answer if Chicago builds an early lead. The Bears will be without Kyler Gordon, while Cam Lewis is doubtful with a hip injury. Those absences offer a possible opening for New York's passing game.

The Jets also have fewer offensive options available. Breece Hall is out with a quad injury, and receiver Adonai Mitchell, tight end Mason Taylor and guard Dylan Parham are ruled out. Tight end Kenyon Sadiq is questionable. These losses affect the backfield, receiving group and blocking, making it harder to assume Smith's positive start will translate into consistent scoring.

New York's route to an upset is to keep the offense productive enough to force Chicago to answer through the air. That would test the Bears' replacement quarterback and altered offensive line. It is a plausible route, though the Jets' own absences make execution less certain.

On defense, linebacker Francisco Mauigoa is out and edge rusher Kingsley Enagbare is questionable. The immediate task is containing Chicago's running game. Forcing longer passing situations would make the Bears' quarterback uncertainty more consequential.

Chicago Bears outlook

Chicago enters 2-1 after beating Philadelphia 27-7 on September 28. Keenum passed for 247 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in that victory. His performance is meaningful evidence that the Bears can score without Williams, although Ben Johnson declined to name either Keenum or Bagent as the starter against New York.

Williams is out with a hamstring injury suffered against Minnesota in Week 2. Chicago said this will be his second missed game. The uncertainty concerns who runs the offense and how effectively it functions, rather than whether Williams might return for this matchup.

Swift fully practiced Friday after missing Thursday with knee soreness and received no game-status designation. That is encouraging for an offense leading the league in rushing production. Jones' knee injury creates a separate problem at left tackle, where Theo Benedet will replace him. Sustaining drives would reduce the need to rely on an unfamiliar passing setup.

Chicago's defensive availability also tempers the pick. Gordon, Shemar Turner and Noah Sewell are out, with Lewis doubtful. The Bears' convincing Philadelphia result supports their winning case, but those absences leave room for Smith to keep New York competitive.

Key matchup factors

The decisive question is whether Chicago's rushing strength can offset its quarterback and left-tackle changes. Successful early-down runs could simplify the replacement starter's job. If New York forces passing situations instead, the personnel uncertainty becomes a larger part of the forecast. The rushing rankings favor Chicago, but they are not a measurement of the Jets' run defense.

SportsJaw's combined consensus favored Bears -3.5 (-110) at 60% and Over 43 (-110) at 78% as of October 3 at 06:55 UTC. The spread shifted one percentage point toward New York from the previous day. SportsJaw members also favored the Over. Those preferences describe support for selections, not win probabilities or a reason by themselves to oppose the popular side.

New York Jets vs Chicago Bears spread prediction

Pass on Bears -3.5 (-110) and Jets +3.5 (-108). The projected six-point Chicago victory would cover the Bears' spread, but the margin carries considerable uncertainty. Chicago's rushing production supports the winner more clearly than it supports a specific winning margin.

Keenum's Philadelphia performance strengthens the favorite's case. Smith's encouraging start, Chicago's defensive absences and the unsettled Bears quarterback decision pull the other way. New York's offensive injuries also make taking the points uncomfortable. Neither side has enough separation from these competing concerns to become the official wager.

New York Jets vs Chicago Bears total prediction

Pass on Over 43 (-110) and Under 43 (-110). The projected 40 points lean below the line, with New York's offensive absences and Chicago's quarterback change contributing to a restrained scoring forecast. That three-point difference is too fragile to justify an Under bet.

There is meaningful counterevidence: Chicago scored 27 against Philadelphia with Keenum contributing three touchdowns, and Smith faces a defense missing several players. Strong rushing production can sustain scoring drives as well as consume time. Without a firmer scoring edge, neither total direction warrants a wager.

New York Jets vs Chicago Bears projected score

Game forecast: Bears 23, Jets 17. Chicago's league-leading rushing production and Swift's Friday availability give the home team the more persuasive winning case. New York's missing offensive contributors make a sustained response harder to project, particularly if the Bears can establish an early advantage.

The strongest counterargument is Smith against Chicago's depleted defense, alongside uncertainty at quarterback and left tackle for the Bears. Those factors could change both the margin and scoring level. Confidence is low. The forecast favors a Chicago cover and a total below 43, but neither margin is secure enough for a betting recommendation. Both markets are passes, and the single official SportsJaw wager is Pass.
